I'm going with some friends on a 10-day escorted Caravan Tours Inc. trip to Costa Rica in early spring 2010. A couple of months later, I plan to return and enroll in a month-long Spanish-immersion class in Quepos. It's always irritated me that my "was-it-really-40 years-ago college Spanish" doesn't go very far, and now that I have the time I can't find any rational reason not to correct that problem.

Anybody been to Quepos and have recommendations for restaurants/ activities?

no suggestions from me but you are visiting one of the places I am considering retiring so any feedback you can provide would be appreciated...

Don't forget to report back on your Spanish immersion class. I have often thought about a Spanish or Italian immersion.

I love the Monteverde cloud forest reserve, which I'm sure is on the itinerary. If you find that you do, too, think about Ecuador for a follow up trip.

Playaman,

Been to Costa Rica many times and going again in a few weeks. Looked at the Caravan route and have been to most of the stops. Costa Rica is a wonderfull and diverse place and the trip should be great. Nothing like emersing yourself in the community to truly live and learn the culture/language.

Never been to Quepos, but there is a Wiki on it. It looks like a town of only a few thousand, so I don't think it will take you more than a few minutes to determine what is available.

Have a good trip!

Never been to CR but have friends that took that same Caravan trip last year and they are still raving about it. Accommodations, scenery, and food seem to top their list.

Went on the Caravan tour a couple of years ago with my husband and we loved it! Costa Rican spanish is a little different. I liked the way they said you are welcome, con mucho gusto...
Libraries might have a phrase book you can borrow with Costa Rican phrases.
One thing that we didn't think would happen was my husband's heat exhaustion on the last day. He is diabetic, not on insulin, and the beans and rice diet was not his usual meal. He is generally low carb. We hiked along the beach at San Antonio, and in the rainforest there, and on the bus ride home he got the worst cramp in his leg. As we entered the hotel, he sat down, I was holding him and he just fell asleep! I yelled Diabetico, and the first aid people came along with a wheel chair, and took him to the first aid. He woke up after a minute, and they said drink gatorade. Of course it's full of sugar! Luckily, one of the fellow tourists had crystal lite to go, and he felt a lot better in a couple of hours.
We bring Crystal lite whenever we go to hot places now.
Anyway you will have a great time!
