Las Vegas: Where to stay, what to do, where to eat?

Anyone just come back from Vegas and know of a nice, clean and not expensive place to stay on or near the Strip? My son and his girl have a time share on the Strip condo loan from her father, but I have to find a place for me to stay.

We'll be there mid-May, so I probably need to book stuff now.

Also, food is ridiculous there on the Strip. My friend just paid $40 for a breakfast there! Wow...what are they serving? So, if anyone has a suggestion as to where to eat that is good but reasonable it would be great.

I, also, will have my car, so leaving the area is not a problem at all.

I'm reading older posts here, but is there anything that you feel is a must-not-miss there going on NOW? Any shows or special events going on in May that you know about that should be seen?

With all the traveling I've done, I've never been to Vegas which seems to floor most of my friends when I tell them.:blush:
 
I haven't been to Vegas in about 3 years or so, but I've been there many times. We've always stayed at the Luxor (DH's favorite casino/hotel). Since we are gamblers, we get free rooms, meals and limo service. If you gamble at all, get a player's card and you may be comped.

The show at night downtown on the 'canopy' is a must see.

...and for cryin' out loud, if you drive, be extremely careful on the Strip!
 
Maybe I should stay just off the Strip then if it's dangerous with a car?
Any suggestions:confused: I am so open to suggestions as I have no clue at all where to stay.:blush:
 
If Jersey Boys is still playing you have got to go (if you like Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons). In my book it was up there with Celine Dions show at Ceasars when she was there. Saw Elton John there but..wished we'd skipped it. Saw the cirque du soleil type water show at the Wynn...and I would skip that too. I'm assuming it's still playing there as the auditorium was built specifically for that show. Neither my husband or I liked it at all and it's quite expensive. I've stayed at the Bellagio, the Paris, the Venetian. With the comps my husband gets we did not pay much to stay at these places. Please tour Ceasars Palace shops around late afternoon or so and watch the ceiling turn from daytime to nighttime. The Venetian Hotel has a water canal running thru it...with boat and singers. Also the lobby of the Bellagio is worth seeing with it's Chihuly glass flowers adorning the ceilings. Walk the strip in front of the Bellagio at night and watch the water fountains and lights. The "Wynn" is equally impressive.
We took the day trip via Hummer to the rim of the Grand Canyon. It can also be done by helicopter but...I was not getting into a helicopter not knowing anything about the pilot.
O.K.....I'm ready to go back now.

The problem with driving on the Strip, IMO, is that there are many taxis, limos, busses, etc. that are going at a fast pace. Along with these vehicles, there are pedestrians staring at the sites/enjoying a beverage and they don't watch where they are going. A recipe for disaster.

I'm not sure about off Strip. I do know most large casinos/hotels have different restaurants that you can choose from. They also have McDonalds, Pizza Hut...different fast food chains available inside the hotels.
 
It's been about 5 years for me, but there is a Marriott, Courtyard and Residence Inn next to each other one long block off the Strip.
 
I was just reading reviews of hotels and read one about a burglary when a gal was sleeping at Mandalay Bay. Seems lots of burglaries happen there.

Anyone know anything about Palace Station or Excalibur? A Policeman wrote a great review of Palace Station.

Gosh but I hate trying to do this when I have never been there...
 
I was there a couple of weeks ago. I stayed at the Rodeway on Convention Center, a couple of blocks from the strip. It was $50 Sunday night and 31.50 Monday through Thursday. It was modest, but clean, with large rooms. Very modest free breakfast.

I didn't find any cheap places to eat, but wasn't really looking. Kristofer's in the Rivera had a good prime rib dinner special for $20.

With a car, you can get a great food (especially breakfast) at Blueberry Hill. There are several in town, they're family owned and the prices are great.
There are several in town and one is near the north end of the strip, so once you've picked your hotel just Google it.

Virtually all of the food in the big casino's is obscenely expensive. However, there are great deals for 'seniors'....not implying that you are one, but most places give discounts for those 55 and older.

You can also eat for less by going to one of the Tix4Tonight kiosks and buying a discount food coupon. You pay $2 - $3 for the coupon and can get 50% off of your meal. A good example is BeniHana. For $3 whole bucks you can save 50% on your check (not including alcohol and tips). To find a kiosk near your hotel go to Tix4Tonight.com.

When I was staying at the Bellagio about 5 years ago...there was a murder at Mandalay Bay. I think you may be right...a lot of stuff goes on there.

Hey, I found a geezer hotel (more or less from reading reviews) right across from the Bellagio called Bill's Gamblin' Hall and Saloon. Anyway, it's a small hotel with alot of good reviews to it regarding safety, and seems like a lot of older folks stay there.
However, it looks like a brothel with alot of red velvet in it. I'd stay there for the laugh if anything.:LOL:

Anyone ever stay there at all? I understand the small casino there is loaded with smoke, but I don't gamble hardly so that won't be a factor for me.

I found it pretty cheap ($50 +/-), and the location is prime really.
 
Try Harrah's right on the strip. They are walking distance (if that is possible) to many of the sights (Ceasars, Venetian, Bellagio, Wynn, ...etc.). Free parking too.

It looks like LV is on sale right now. No one seems to be going and everyone is giving cheap(er) or free (some nights) rooms.

If you want some of these 'freebies', go online (Harrahs.com) and sign up for their players card. Once on there, look for their 'member' rates.

Not to be missed is the Venetian, second floor. See St. Marks square sans pidgeons, canals and gondolas, sans smell. Go and walk Ceasars forum. Bellagio is a beautiful casino, ... go out on the veranda and see the water fountain store. Go to the Mirage and see the Beatles show ... if you like Beatles. Go downtown and see the canopy show at night,. Check out some of the old casinos like Binions while you're there.

With a car, you can go off strip and eat where the locals do and save a bunch of money. 40 bucks for breakfast is stupid (I assume that was for 1 person).
You can usually get to McD's or food court in many places too.

Excellent suggestions which I will take, by the way! That helps alot!

I'm not a drinker or gambler, but I really want to get over and see the shops at Caeser's that I've heard of for so long and the Bellagio water show. I might even take a quick trip to Mount Charleston.
What I don't want to do is come home broke and tired like so many people do. Just not my thang.

And I would like to check out one of the Cirque shows and maybe a good comedy show. Any suggestions as to which are the best other than Love?
 
I appreciate the timing of this thread, as DW and I are heading to Vegas in a couple of weeks. We are staying off strip in a time share thingy the in laws got sucked into years ago.

Our main activity will be climbing at red rocks and a little cycling, but we probably throw in a show or two for good measure. thanks for the suggestions on shows...

like orchidflower, i've never been to vegas, despite living in arizona and utah!

Also, go on yelp.com and punch in "The Best of Las Vegas" and leave the city area of the search bar empty and you will find some reviews on what to do and where to go. Yelp has alot of information on it. Right now I am researching shows and places to eat. We shall see what I find.:cool:
 
Thanks for that tip, cause I really like Penn and Teller alot on tv. I was considering going to see them, since I almost can't stand CarrotTop.
Well, Penn & Teller leave the Rio the 11th until the 29th or some such date. Not there when I am....poop!

There's a Mac-somebody who's comedy show is supposedly funny, too, there.
 
Check out the Car Museum at the Imperial....

it's GGGGGRRREAT! If you like cars, and history related to cars, this is the place. We got in for free. We found the car museum listed in several off the beaten path guides. But the Imperial Palace is right on the strip. It's similar to Bill's - older, not too flashy. But if you like cars the museum is a trip you'll remember for a lifetime.

The regular entrance price is not too high but mention your military service, AAA membership, or any number of other affiliations and you might find yourself getting in for free. I just checked out the web site and found you can print your own ticket for free.

I am still amazed at the collection they've amassed (sp?). Several one-offs, very rare and unusual cars from celebrities. It's not fancy, but it's one of a kind!

if you stay at harahs its adjacent and has a walkway to imperial palce. Also staying at harahs... the street BEHIND the hotel under the tram where the parking is is great for paralleling the strip w/o traffic if you are driving. A car is handy to visit old town - i recommend Hugo's Cellar at the Four Queens Hotel rental cars are inexpensive in vegas - use southwest.com to book a car and check their specials pages.
 
Well, I surely like old cars and even go to the antique auto shows by myself, cause none of my girlfriends have any interest at all. I'll go to the car show for sure..thanks.
 
Also - i like a cocktail at the rio... and if you visit the strotosphere, take an elevator up to the lounge, you are fee to visit the deck from there for free but sort of ethically obligated to have a drink - either way its a good deal over paying for an elevator ride.
 
I won't be taking that roller coaster that goes around the top of some hotel or taking the Stratosphere elevator to the top. Scared of heights here.:hide:
But there will be many other board members willing and wanting to do this I'll bet, so thanks for the information.


(P.S. Just about fell out of a ferris wheel from the top at 5, and can still see my mother on the ground screaming. I think I'm scarred for life...:blush:)
