I had to attend a presentation today dealing with the challenges the field of higher education faces due to a declining high school population demographic and the current economic challenges. The following quotations were included in the presentation and I thought they were were inspirational as I approach ER.

Herodotus (Greek historian) -- "He is the best who, when making his plans, fears and reflects on everything that can happen to him, but in the moment of action is bold."

Will Rogers -- "An economist's guess is liable to be as good as anyone else's."

Howard Jones, 1980s pop music icon --
"We're not scared to lose it all
Security through the wall
Future dreams we have to realize
A thousand skeptic hands
Won't keep us from the things we plan
Unless we're clinging to the things we prize

And do you feel scared - I do
But I won't stop and falter
And if we threw it all away
Things can only get better"

Work is a necessary evil to be avoided.

Mark Twain

I remember telling some of my (former) coworkers something like this when I explained how and why I was retiring in 2008.
