I've set a date to be April 1, 2020. I'll be 55 then and DW will be 50. I hope to graduate on time or before this date! It looks on track so far. My next milestone is 2.5M(currently have 2.3M in taxable/retirement accounts).

We are looking at retiring around that time too. I'll be 56 and DW will be 58. Our only child will be in college by then. We have about 4.5M in retirement savings ~ equally split between taxable and pretax. We are pretty comfortable will our plans at this point as we are debt-free and have saved about 2/3 of what we need for our child's college. My only concern (for both myself and DW) is getting to retirement before completely burning out.

My spouse will retire in 2020, assuming that gainful employment remains available through that year. We're unfortunately about half as financially secure as the OP, so I hope I don't have to work too many more years after 2020 to keep our plans viable.

Major milestone - 2.5M

I just reached a major milestone of 2.5M as of yesterday's close towards my journey to FI. My goal is to reach 3.5M before I consider myself FI and will then hopefully graduate ontime/before 2020. I'll update my progress here every 100K increment(yes increment only...:)). At this point, if I just stay employed and not contribute towards my asset, I'll still be fine for 2020. This is how journey has been so far...

You have some major clams saved up....your expenses must be quite high!

I am glad that my thoughts about, and decision to retire happened quickly (a few months) after knowing I could. The thought of being 5+ years from being able to be free seems like it would be torture! Unless you enjoyed your career. Mine was starting to kill me :nonono: RM in megapharma.

Anyway, congrats on the impressive savings and lofty goal of 3.5M !

Aiming for January 2020 myself at age 42, DW would be 39. Hoping to hit FI in late 2019. Whether I fully retire or semi-retire depends on a lot of things - first, getting FI, then what DW and I do regarding a family.

Either way, the goal stands: FI by January 2020. ER? A man can dream!

I'm planning to secure 120K/Yr withdrawal and that's the reason why I'm shooting for 3.5M. 80K will cover all my expenses and 40K for travel and other stuff. Also, I want to have enough in Kids' 529 plan(150K/kid..already have 91K/Kid now) before I RE.

I'm glad that you're already enjoying your freedom...It's day dreaming for me now..:)

Nash...All the best to you! Are you on track so far? Please share your details and progress if you like to.

Just 1.5 month later...Another update and a milestone today - 2.6M. Nine more updates to go. This is a dream run and hope it continues for a while and repeat the market of 1995.

Another Milestone - 2.7M

This time it took about five months to jump 100K. What a dream run this has been! I'm very excited and a little scared also when I think about 2000/2008 crash. All the best to remaining class of 2020.

Oh, cool, I'm glad to see there IS a class of 2020 thread! I tried searching for it a few times, but nothing came up in the past. I've set 2020 as my "no later than" date, and preferably April 2, which is my 50th birthday. I'll go out sooner if possible, but figure 2020 is probably a more realistic goal.

One way that helps to make it easier thinking about it, is that instead of "almost six years", I'm looking at it as "less than 70 months". :)

I would like to know what your investments are in. They are growing great!

65/35 EQ/FI - Almost all DFA funds. What you see is not all in returns. I put about 60K in 401k/RothIRA/saving etc per year in my existing portfolio.

Doing great! You may have to join me in the Class of 2018 thread (that's pretty quiet.)

I'm shooting for 2018, partly because I'll be 55 and that will give me a lot of flexibility with my 401k. However, Megacorp could offer a buyout sometime soon which may adjust my plans. I think I can deal with it, but it would just mean less flexibility.

Is 55 something special for you, or just an age? I.e., do you have considerations like a 401k plan that allows withdrawals if employed in the year of age 55?

Nothing special about age 55 regarding any financial matters just a personal thing. My father had a massive heart attack and he died on his way home half hour after his work in textile mill(hard work). He was only 55.

I'll sure retire earlier than 2020 if numbers work out.

That is my Estimated Time of Arrival at age 55 :)

Goal is to retire in the Summer of 2020 when I will be 41. in 2010 I set a 10 year target to save as much money in order to be FIRE by 2020 and so far so good.

Current net worth is 816K.

My plan is to be out on Jan. 6, 2020.

Would love to have more in savings, but our expenses are increasing faster than our savings.

LCOL in a warmer climate is where we hope to land!

Decided 2020 would be a good target. Seems like I could retire today (2.4M saved and house paid-off, no kids, 60k/yr expenses), but I just like the idea of retiring after 20 years in the industry. 4 years left then. :)

Ha! I just saw this like three years after it was posted.

In theory, I'm on track. Hitting my FI number by 2020 was based on a 6% nominal return contributing roughly 40% per year. We've raised our real contributions now with promotions and COL raises, and are probably pretty close to 50% gross income going to savings.

I believe we'll make FI as planned on the original set of circumstances, but those circumstance may soon change as they tend to do when you're in your mid- to late-30s. Whether or not I join the RE class of 2020 is very much up in the air!

Still crossing my fingers for 2020. Last three years' pathetic performance of International Equities and this year's sell off has shed my portfolio by 300K. I'm currently at 2.625M and goal is 3.5M. Putting away about 50K/year in retirement accounts.

Reached 2.9M..Six more updates to go

This 100K took forever. I contributed about 50K so it went up only 50K in little more than two years. International Equities were the culprit!

I will be joining- thought I could retire in 2018 but looks like I will be better off with regards to healthcare if I go in 2020. Unless the law changes so that it will be more beneficial for me - as we are really FI now. Anybody else in this group?
