Memorial Day

I think it's important to point out that Memorial Day isn't another Veteran's day we have in the spring. It is specifically to honor *fallen* servicemen and women. Let us not dilute the remembrance.

(No disrespect meant to veterans, of course, in fact in my experience they are usually the first to point this out).

Jon - Thanks you are right.

My thought was to thank those who have served during our wars and lost friends and family in combat along the way.

I am a vet and no offense taken and you are absolutely correct. Today is the day to honor those who gave all.

If you haven't already seen the movie "Taking Chance" it is worth the time and puts Memorial Day in a proper perspective.

Yes!

Sometimes I still slip and call it Decoration Day. Stems from my childhood and was always one of my favorite holidays as it signaled school being out and the start of summer. In my small hometown in Ohio, Decoration Day was always a big event. The high school band led the parade and all the veterans marched to the cemetary and paid respect to all who had died in the wars. It was really a big deal. It was changed to Memorial Day in 1967.

Thanks to all those who serve, have served, and those who died for our country.

Two poems for the day.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond Englands foam.
"For the Fallen"by Laurence Binyon (1914)

****
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
"In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae (1919)

1) If you have a flag, be sure to fly it today.

2) If you do not have one, go get one and refer to (1) above.

Item one: Done.
