Hi all, new to the forum, been reading for a while, lots of good info. I had a question regarding heath care for those that are retiring young and have health concerns or a family member with health concerns.

I'm 33 now, and plan to semi retire around 50. I work for mega corp now, and have great insurance, but my son has had a lot of health concerns (cancer) in his first two years, and could have more down the road (currently doing well). My first question is, if I left mega corp, could I even get him covered? Is there a good place to read up on pre-existing conditions and what that means for getting insurance and cost.

It seems to me that I may not be able to leave mega corp until my son is no longer on my insurance, b/c it's very important right now with the high medical bills we have each year. I currently have a HSA, so I max it out, and it helps pay for everything pre tax, as well as it maxes out each year at $9,000.

My last question is, when my son is on his own, for insurance, will he be able to get insured. Obviously a lot could change in the next 20 years, but just curious if anyone has info or experienced something similar.

You should be able to find answers to your questions here: What is ObamaCare / What is Health Care For America?

EDIT: I failed to mention the linked site is not exactly neutral when it comes to heaping praise on the program. However, it does appear the basic facts about the program are accurate.

thanks, as long as I can find the info I need, everyone has their opinions on health care reform.

You just answered your own question.
The 2-decade cone of uncertainty for anything is large.

agreed, and thanks for the info. The toughest thing for me is that I like to have a plan, and with some much unknown it's tough to have one.

I honestly would love to and could feasibly go to part time work / semi retirement sooner than 50, the number one thing stopping me is the the health insurance. Kind of a bummer really.

I don't mind working and actually still want to, I just want about 3 months off a year. Not asking too much, right :)
