Transition from Spousal to my own SS benefit

I've been collecting a spousal benefit for a few years now but will turn 70 on March 31st. I'm just wondering what is the easiest approach to making the switch to my own benefit. When should I do it? Can it be done online or by phone or will I have to make an appointment and go to the office?

Appreciate advice from those who have made this transition.

Called the local SS office when I did mine--they handled it all, no surprises.

YOu can't make the switch online. Either via a phone appt or in-office appt.

Check out this thread on a current ongoing discussion. I started this thread, but others have chimed in. I would stress that it behooves you to start the process 90 days before you turn 70.
