I have a stick style Dyson and will never go back. Good for carpet and flat surfaces.

Miele here too. It replaced an ancient Kenmore canister which served us well for half the price but hey, blow that dough. 
LOL we have a vacation home out of state that's already furnished where we're heading so we won't take it with.

Even if you buy the $700 Miele that Wirecutter recommends for their luxury pick and resell it before you move, you're not going to get $560 for it used. The Shark is the better deal. I have one and it works fine on both my laminate floors and my carpet. We have three stories, so two carpeted spiral staircases, and the lift-away is much easier to use on them than getting the canister we had before up and down.
I'd get a Shark and save the money. They have a 5-year warranty.

Do you have carpet? We did and we were impressed by the Dyson. Then, we realized that most of the stuff in the canister was carpet fibers. It seemed like it was destroying our carpet a little bit each time we vacuumed.

nope, i mean i haven't weighed it, and I don't have to carry it up stairs or anything, but I've never thought it heavy at all. Had mine since 2014 I think?
It's one of the cordless stick animal versions. You can often find deals on older model refurbs, and dyson warranty support is pretty darn good even on those. Mine was just out of warranty when the head brushes stopped turning (I had fiddled with it because I get a LOT of hair in them). They sent me a new head mechanism no charge, and it's run fine the past 3 years after that.
I like that it also comes with attachments so I can use it in my car as well.

I have a shark navigator . I bought it at Bed , Bath & Beyond with their 20% off coupon .I've had it for several years and it has worked well. I never use the lift off part so if there is a cheaper version without it that's what I would buy .

+1 on Dyson... we have two... one in each home for a couple years. Lightweight and very powerful for a cordless. Even DW was impressed with how good it sucks!
We've had a couple occasions where it will not work... it just pulses on and off... but in each case it has been that there was a major plug somewhere along the line.
We have the dyson V6 animal extra... a friend has a V10 and says that it really sucks.

We have hardwood flooring in our house, and my wife is shall I say a "clean freak." She is really big on vacuuming the home.
The rechargeable Shark vacuum did a great job, but we went through a couple of them within a year. I finally bought her a Dyson rechargeable vacuum for every day cleanups, especially in the kitchen and at the front door.
The Dyson is really nice, however it doesn't hold much dirt. My wife has a Oreck that is simple, cheap and does a great job on bedroom carpeting.
The Dyson also does great cleaning out our cars.

This is also what we have, including a separate hardwood floor attachment. I love the HEPA filters for pets and allergens!

We have rental apartments, some of them in a college town. Our vacuums have been retrieved from or next to dumpsters. Probably have picked up ten or more, replaced a bag or belt and either used them or put them in common areas in the apartments for tenant use. Also bought a Roomba for use in our house down south - it requires way too much care for its grooviness factor. The gal likes it though.

Our new house came with a central vac. I thought they went out of style, but now that we have one, I am not sure how we lived without it. It's more powerful than a push vac and all we have to do is move a hose around the house including the garage. There is also a little kick open suction vent under the kitchen cabinets that you can sweep big chucks into like if you spill oatmeal or something. Who knew?

Then, we moved into a new house and a central vacuum cannot be installed without tearing the walls apart. Damn.

Ditto on the Shark Navigator. We got it at Costco. The dirt tank cracked about 10 months in and I called and they sent a new one out, no charge. 4 years later and it still sucks, in a good way.
