Grow a retirement beard?

At retirement, I (again) grew a beard… I couldn’t stand it. I cut it off, leaving a long mustache overhang as a different “look”.

The day I started pulling the levers towards retirement I started my beard.
DW, the only one who knows why, doesn't mind too much as long as I keep it trimmed.
The day the keys are finally turned over I plan to pack the beard in.

After 20 years in in the Air Force in 1997, I had a full beard before my terminal leave was finished. While wearing the uniform, I could probably count the number of times on one hand where I didn't draw blood in my morning shave.

I've watched it gradually turn gray over the ensuing years. Couple of years ago, I started wearing it short when the increasing number of gray hairs exhibited a tendency to curl. Wife prefers it long, so I'm growing it back out right now, hopefully it'll behave, still have to work a few more years in a job where I can't look too much like a yeti....

Started on mine when I took the vacation time leading up to my retirement. Don't know how long I will keep it. DW seems ok with it.

No way! Although I do like the term in the article: "Hobo Chic", ha ha.

Here in the Philippines, facial hair is definitely not popular. I have a clean cut reputation and a face to match it ;-)

I last shaved in 1976 to celibate the bicentennial. It's all part of my LBYM plan. Just thinking of the time & money I've saved leaves me all warm & fuzzy feeling, literally.

I've never had one. Who knows.....maybe I will start one this winter. I have a feeling it will make me look older....... which is not a good thing.

Shortly after my ER I grew a beard, but only kept it for a few months. Way too much work. On Y2K night I dyed it green (along with my hair) after losing a bet with DD.

I have a thin beard so if I grew one it would just look mottled and unkempt. But the flip side is a great benefit: I only shave once or twice a week! Razor blades are lasting a lot longer now.

Haven't retired yet, but another guy with thin, splotchy beard. DW will not approve of me letting it grow out, as it would likely take weeks to get beyond "sandpaper" stage.

Add me to the thin, splotchy group. Used to be thick and dark brown. What happened?

Usually have the "circle beard", and sometimes a full beard, but kept at whisker level; i.e. five o'clock shadow.

It's hard to grow a beard for retirement when you've had one for over 30 years...

I grew a beard in early college. Took it off once at (I think) 25. No reason to cut it off now after ER. Sure I have more time to do it, but why? DW prefers the beard. Does it make me look older.... who cares! So, note a RE beard... just a beard.

I grew a beard a few years after I retired and I liked the look but hated the feel and maintenance. Maybe if I had kept it for more than a month it would have "grown on me".

I waited until I'd been retired nine years to grow a beard. Kept it about 18 months before tiring of it. DW didn't notice I'd shaved it until three days after the fact when someone commented it was gone...:nonono:

My only change would be if I shaved my goatee off after retirement. Or maybe shorter, it is usually around 4-5 inches length off my chin.

I probably could do a moustache if I retired those tweezers...

But I have stopped coloring my hair - perhaps that is similar for us ladies?
