What is your retirement Goal/Dream?

I always thought we would take long slow travel. You know 2 months in Florence. a month on Lake Como, long term rental in London. maybe a house in NZ,etc. Didn’t work out that way. Turned out we needed to be closer to aging parents who needed our help. So instead bought a couple of vacation type homes in North America. Things change, you adapt, all good.
Yes! In 2008, MIL died of lung cancer, and our snowbird life began in earnest. We rent through airbnb for a month in Europe.

But we will probably adjust the lifestyle again after 10 years. We want to see South America, for example. That conflicts with winters in Mexico. So we might rent out our place when we travel to South America, Africa and Australia.

My goal was to travel and really get into my hobbies. I’m well under way.
+1. My goals have always evolved, and I don’t know why that would change in retirement. I also can’t be happy doing one thing, I enjoy life more if I’m involved in lots of different activities. I’ve ticked over 70 items off my evolving bucket list with many more to go. However, my main focus when I retired 6 years ago was sailing and sail racing. That’s run it’s course, though I’ll still daysail and race OPB, but my main focus now is on reviving a golf game. Who knows what it will be in 5-10 years.

I didn't really have a "goal", other than working until vested in pension and retiree health care. But now that I am retired, I like being able to do what I want, when I want. We are eating healthier, sleeping better, traveling enough to keep things interesting. So far, retirement life is pretty darn good!

I will start. I want to RE at about 55, purchase a catamaran, and sail around the world for about 6 years. The DW is on board.

During this time the Wife and I will be delivering school supplies to remote island schools and helping kids anyway we can.

What is your Goal?

Can I have your goal :)

Here is my more serious answer:

- Retire in 2020 - Our goal is to get fit and see the world
- Hike the Pacific Crest Trail for 6 months
- Fly to New Zealand and go sailing with my pal in Fiji & Tonga for our winter
- THen buy a catermeran and sail the: med, atlantic, caribbean, etc until bored.

Our goals

  • Retire at 59 in March 2020 after collecting the 2019 bonus. Maxed retiree medical and nearly 35 years max to SS at this point.
  • Buy a 9mm Glock and put a nice round hole through the forehead of my alarm clock.
  • Move to Florida in a nice house on an island. (completed :D)
  • Spend time on improving personal fitness.
  • Spend time growing together with spouse.
  • Travel to the Med, UK and Europe. Then Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Maybe the Holy Land if there is peace in the middle east during our lifetimes.
  • Complete lingering house projects and community volunteer between trips.
  • After overseas bucket list is done, buy a big used Newmar RV. Run all over the continent chasing 70 degree weather.
  • Spoil the grandkids when they finally arrive on the scene.
And most importantly...... never ever work for a paycheck ever again.

Now get the heck off my lawn

:greetings10:

1) Spending more time at the ranch working it and getting my hands dirty each day
2) Hunting, fishing, hiking and working more on my hobbies
3) Staying healthy and doing what I want to do anytime I want to
4) I had a plan from early on that my goal was to live of the interest of my money
5) Spending more time at my cabin/shack I built

With great fortune and being blessed each day it all has come true.

I like Wally's goal (You know, Dilbert's coworker).

Work myself into a situation where I have no effect on anything.

No grand plans for retirement. Just want to be freed from job responsibilities and free to do as I please. I'd likely do more outdoor activities, maybe pickup a few other hobbies, eat, sleep, exercise and relax. I'm more of homebody, so I don't plan on doing big trips or adventures/experiences away from home.

Landed my first corporate job with Home Depot at age 26 and dreamed/planned to become financially independent by age 40, the only plan I have now is to never return to the workforce

Our dream was to retire to our extremely low COL area, and to spend summers across town at our lake house on the Tennessee River. We also have a RV in the mountains.

Our daughter has been quite a behavioral problem and we ended up having to raise our granddaughter in retirement. She is now 6 years old and in the first grade at a private school. While I wanted to be traveling the world at this point of my life, I do love taking this very sharp, precious little girl to and from school daily.

We cherish every day, and pray our health will hold up long enough to raise Brynley. Anyway it goes, she will be financially provided for.

God bless you and your granddaughter.

My plan has changed after many different events and setbacks.

I (and DW) would like to retire at 59 (just don't want to work at that 60 number) with no change in current income, or I guess rather spending. I would like to move to a slightly smaller house, with some different features than the current one. Be free to help my oldest daughter, and my youngest daughter and granddaughter (who is somewhat troubled, like Bamaman). All of this, while both wife and I having the time to work on getting in better shape and enjoying retirement/life.

1. Just enjoy the free time, doing what I feel drawn towards, even if that is just doing something "unproductive" (e.g., playing a videogame, browsing forums on the internet).

2. Develop my spiritual life more. Spirituality has always been important, but increasingly so as I get older. I find myself reading and watching a lot of spiritually oriented material -- not because I "ought to," but just because I'm drawn to it.

3. Develop more of a social life outside of work. While I was working full time, I didn't develop many meaningful connections outside of work. I want to change that.

4. Rest and relax. Take things at my own pace.

5. Learn new things. I learn through books and Youtube, mostly, but I'd like to attend in-person classes, too.

I’m finding that my goals in FIRE are getting simpler and less grandiose the closer I get to it, which is less than 3 years now. When I had 6 years to go and hated my boss but was still progressively growing richer, creating a list of possible exotic lifestyle choices and a massive bucket list was a needed escape for me. It was the old fight or flight kicking in, and very heavy on the flight. Since then, as an interim lurch for sanity, I got a different job with a boss who behaves like a human being should. I am enjoying my career again, which seems to have neutralized a lot of my fantasy day dreaming, though I still have my list. I’m still very excited to FIRE but my goals for it have more to do with spending time with family, exploring local interests and, yes, plenty of travel with DW. But I don’t need to become a bartender in the Caribbean who is allergic to a daily calendar and wearing shoes, etc., etc.

Definitely two things: travel, including long distance bike trips; and volunteer work, most likely with the Ignatian Volunteer Corps that does short term (e.g. 4-8 week) stints abroad.
I'd really like to see all the national parks.

Probably take long cross country camping trips and start ticking off all the frank lloyd wright designed properties I can get into!

I think like you, and I spend 10 months out of the year in Florence--Alabama that is. I do have a lake house, but it is on Lake Wilson and not on Lake Como.
We do keep a RV in the Blue Ridge Mountains and it is a beautiful place--but it's not exactly The Dolomites. We do take a couple of big trips a year, and have seen just about every place we want to visit--except Ireland. We are taking a repositioning cruise in 8 weeks and a car tour of Ireland.

To the OP,

one of my cousins and his wife did something similar in a variety of conventional sail boats. They worked in schools and helped with mission trips to a variety of islands from Bermuda all the way around to the Gulf side of Mexico.

Be sure to check out www.gonewiththewynns.com - they travel the world, first in North America in an RV, and now around the world on a large catamaran. I don't think they volunteer - at least not as you described - but lots of good information on their web site.
