When you have been around this forum for a long time ...

Been a member since 2008. Every forum has its regarded experts, and I always read said experts posts closely, because I can learn a lot from these people. This forum has been a godsend while I was working. It kept me focused on the end game, while continually giving me ideas to banter about my brain.

I don't post much due to my style of writing tends to offend, even though no offence was intended, well, except one thread I created. I got very snarky on that one!

Maybe DAYDREAMER should change to daydreamer? ... just kidding. :)

I used all caps on one snarky text to our son and that was a mistake.

One thing of note: It's the long time regulars & mods who keep this forum as what it is - a great learning place to hang around. So, pat yourselves on the back. You know who you are.

+1000

I have only been a member here for about 4 years, but I lurked for at least 5 tears before that.

What I learned here helped me to have the courage to RE (tho not as early as many).

But my biggest pleasure is to find a site where we can talk about a myriad of issues without it becoming insulting, political, or just plain nasty.

Hats off to the mods that make that happen.

It is true that your IQ goes up the longer you frequent this forum. Just take a look at long timers posts. Most of the posts are pretty smart as opposed to newbies posts. :)

It is also true that you become richer faster by reading the long timers posts.

I haven't been on this forum that long, but yes, there are members that I do feel that I know, and yes, I have given out a lot of personal information.

I was trying to handle finances properly before I found this website, i.e. pay off credit cards every month, max out 401(k), don't accumulate debt, an emergency stash but, there was so much - I did not know that I did not know.

This forum is encouraging me to take concrete steps towards the goal.

i don't restrict my reading to the experts ,
the newcomers often ask questions i have never thought about and made choices i have not yet decided to avoid ( or embrace )

my only regret is i didn't stumble onto this site in 2010 , when i was making pivotal decisions in this area .

It's nice when you get one of those messages that someone appreciates your post.

LOL. Great responses.

+2. This forum has made the process of early retirement much easier for my DW and me as a couple. By realizing that there is a community of people here that LBYM and invest their hard earned $ with a purpose in mind, has permitted us to find threads relating to the issue we have at a given time. Examples include getting and paying for health insurance, dealing with those who did not retire early, and moving to a location with a lower COL.

Thanks to the mods and to everyone on board... :)

I try to remember to use the thanks button.

Once in awhile I think I know everything I need to know about something and then someone pops up with an interesting insight on it. Or they say something that leads me to another thought that is useful.

BTW... Jeanie recently figured out my username... She's been calling me "Moldy" for years.
I assumed you had made up a new short form for I'm older than you and I consider you ancient whenever I see you post. But I do respect my elders!

:D I just realized I have posted over 2000 times in this forum. I could have done on-line product evaluations to make $$$ instead. What a time wasted!

OTOH, I have saved at least $200,000 based on advice on this forum. Investing decisions, insurance, etc.

It's also helped with home repairs and ideas for my books.

I've learned to use the 'delete' button. For some reason I am better at evaluating my responses after I realize people may actually read them.

Among the best things I picked up here are:

Using peanut butter to remove sticky glue from various objects

PenFed 3% CD's.

Good mods are worth it. Thanks gals and guys.

What I've learned from this forum

  • Know when to hold them, know when to fold them, know when to walk away, know when to run
  • You never count your money when you're sitting at the table, you can count your money, when the dealings done
  • Quit when you're ahead or until ERD50 puts you in your place :flowers:
  • Keep reading, it gets better
  • When asking for advice, be ready for it
  • When giving an opinion, be ready for advice
  • Know you'll to agree to disagree
  • Remember, you're not studying for a final, applying for a job, looking to impress, or writing a dissertation. You're just being you.

When you can recall that the "What did you do today?" thread was 955 pages and 19,091 posts.

One more thing. I've not read a single post that said "I don't know."

Truly grateful for tips and directions to investigate - we continue to run the rentals rather than being super invested in the stock market (and I remember several stock crashes that had people talking about being in the two comma club while the rentals kept chugging along) and we continue to loan money to property flippers and builders. Basically, it feels like we are outliers here but we've certainly taken advantage of Penfed and our stock funds are mostly Vanguard, so sincere thanks for that. Our taxes are high and that makes me feel dumb when looking at how others manage their income, but it's kind of a first world problem.

Did have a bit of a basic math flash yesterday when reading about someone working a bank call center and talking with a client who wanted a million dollars worth of CDs - person was irked that the client was going to be making more from the CDs than he would working 40 hours/week at his minimum wage job. Didn't think that was possible, but a million at 3% is $30,000. $30,000 in 50 weeks is $600/week. $600/40 hours is $15/hour. I've been unimpressed by 3% what with inflation and all and when comparing that return with our rental and loan income but sonufagun - simple math for simple minds I guess.

This site and members gave me the courage to RE. It saved me tons of money on tips. It is probably the most helpful forum I've hang around. The other forums I hang around are mostly waste of my time. But this forum, when you hang around for a long time, you can't go wrong. You just become wiser & richer.
