In the mailbox today. And for those in the US , you too very soon.

Have not opened the envelope yet. Will see what info big brother is asking for...........Stay tuned

Here's a list of my answers:

1. Yes
2. Boxers
3. Whenever I can get her drunk enough
4. Always mayonnaise, never ketchup
5. Passive
6. Every other Tuesday
7. Dry clean
8. A mortgage
9. If I thought I wouldn't get caught
10. Football

The part I'm dreading about this is the redistricting. We bought our current house just before a census year, and so in 12 years we were in 3 different congressional districts! I'm already fed up with our state party leadership, although I like my individual reps. I've stopped voting for my Congressional Representative, since that state party leadership has shown it cares more about winning than about representing the voters...and this is the party I usually align with on most issues! (Being vague only to avoid Porky territory. Gerrymandering should really be considered a nonpartisan issue, IMO.)

It’s a good idea to keep politics out of this discussion ... :greetings10:

Big Brother is fulfilling his duty under Article I, Section II, the results of which will then be gerrymandered beyond recognition...

They get how many in the household and ages. Nothing more.

Anyone here still getting those fake "Census" letters being used as fundraising letters by one political party's national committee? I'll bet they resume bigtime next year during the actual census.

Is there anything to stop folks from writing anything they like on the census forms (See Post 2)? How does anyone know, is there a supervisor of the census?

To me it is like a poll, (not an ER poll the other ones being carried out daily by the media) I often answer the opposite of what I am or thinking just to mess with them.

The law has penalties (small fines) for lying on the census. How it's policed exactly I don't know, and I haven't bothered to look, because I wouldn't think to lie on it. To me it's more one of those "duties of citizenship" things, which are thankfully not many.

It's more than a poll - by knowing how many people are in each area, funding can better be planned for, and allocated, and of course determine the number of house seats, and districts, etc.

Never said anything about lying, not on the census anyway, but never having been through a Census before, can one leave blank answers? It is loosely kind of like a poll though. I agree one should be accurate regarding number of household members. But ethnicity, sex, etc. is pushing it a bit.

Still not sure how "they" know what is truth and what is not.

Oh my, I remember reading some from other years that were, to put it mildly, well past "invasive" and into "offensive". Below, I just picked 1880 to quote at random, no specific reason.

Here's a link to 1800 to 1940:

1800 Census Questions :: 1800 U.S. Federal Census :: 1800 Free Census Resources

The following questions were those included on the Population Schedule for the 1880 Census.

  1. In Cities (Name of Street, House Number)
  2. Dwelling houses numbered in order of visitation
  3. Families numbered in order of visitation
  4. The Name of each Person whose place of abode, on 1st day of June, 1880, was in this family.
  5. PERSONAL DESCRIPTION: Color — White, W. Black, B. Mulatto, Mu. Chinese, C. Indian, I.
  6. PERSONAL DESCRIPTION: Sex — Male, M. Female, F.
  7. PERSONAL DESCRIPTION: Age at last birthday prior to June 1, 1880. If under 1 year, give months in fraction
  8. If born within the Census year, give the month
  9. Relationship of each person to the head of the family -- whether wife, son, daughter, servant, border, or other.
  10. Civil Condition: Single
  11. Civil Condition: Married
  12. Civil Condition: Widowed / Divorced, D.
  13. Married during Census year
  14. Occupation: Profession, Occupation or Trade of each person, male or female
  15. Occupation: Number of months this person has been unemployed during the Census year
  16. Health: Blind
  17. Health: Deaf and Dumb
  18. Health: Idiotic
  19. Health: Insane
  20. Health: Maimed, Chrippled, Bedridden, or otherwise disabled
  21. Education: Attended school within the Census year
  22. Education: Cannot read
  23. Education: Cannot write
  24. Nativity: Place of Birth of this person, naming State or Territory of United States, or the Country, if of foreign birth
  25. Nativity: Place of Birth of the Father of this person, naming the State or Territory of United States, or the Country, if of foreign birth.
  26. Nativity: Place of Birth of the Mother of this person, naming the State or Territory of United States, or the Country, if of foreign birth.

Be hard to fill it out if you could not read or write!

I was actually upset by the last census. i dutifully filled it out with my data and had people pestering me constantly with implied threats . . . asking about the neighbors. Who I don't know. And they always came when I was at work anyway so I just got to find these lovely little notes. I could not understand even how to stop it since I had done my thing.

U.S. Code § 221. Refusal or neglect to answer questions; false answers

(a) Whoever, being over eighteen years of age, refuses or willfully neglects, when requested by the Secretary, or by any other authorized officer or employee of the Department of Commerce or bureau or agency thereof acting under the instructions of the Secretary or authorized officer, to answer, to the best of his knowledge, any of the questions on any schedule submitted to him in connection with any census or survey provided for by subchapters I, II, IV, and V of chapter 5 of this title, applying to himself or to the family to which he belongs or is related, or to the farm or farms of which he or his family is the occupant, shall be fined not more than $100.

(b) Whoever, when answering questions described in subsection (a) of this section, and under the conditions or circumstances described in such subsection, willfully gives any answer that is false, shall be fined not more than $500.

(c) Notwithstanding any other provision of this title, no person shall be compelled to disclose information relative to his religious beliefs or to membership in a religious body.

U.S. Code § 222. Giving suggestions or information with intent to cause inaccurate enumeration of population

Whoever, either directly or indirectly, offers or renders to any officer or employee of the Department of Commerce or bureau or agency thereof engaged in making an enumeration of population under subchapter II, IV, or V of chapter 5 of this title, any suggestion, advice, information or assistance of any kind, with the intent or purpose of causing an inaccurate enumeration of population to be made, shall be fined not more than $1,000 or imprisoned not more than one year, or both.

(To the best of my knowledge, I forget a lot of things when confronted by many questions. Isn't willful - just ask any of my old teachers!)

I've gotten two of those fake census letters. The questions are hilarious, but I haven't sent any money. ;)

Looks like We have been singled out for special treatment " randomly selected ". Same thing happened in the 2000 census. Every 3 mo. With updates. It turned into a pain in the ass

It really is not funny. Remember 50% to 60% of the American public are very gullible and relatively uneducated, they tend to believe everything they hear or read, at least till the next nut or slice of bacon is offered. So it is sad to think how many people will be suckered in by all the scams that are and will be offered in the future.

How can you fill out a 2020 Census in 2019 when you may be dead before end of 2019 or have a kid before the end of 2019?

I read...somewhere...that there is far more of an issue with people refusing to answer the census, out of fear of deportation or other worries, than with lying.

That said, I had a great-Aunt who lied to the census taker, saying she was 39 when she was actually 52. I know this from genealogy research...She had been 12 in 1900, 22 in 1910, 32, in 1920, 42 in 1930.

Maybe the census-taker in '40 was a cute guy, and she wanted to appear younger.
