Do we still go to concerts? What concerts have to attended in the last few years?

Kind of a follow up to stepford's, "name a recent Rock and Roll song you like."

Although we are a little picky about the venues we go to we still go to concerts. I'm starting to think we're too old, but we go anyway! LA/Orange county has lots of great concerts to check out.

In the last few years we've seen:

  • Royal Blood
  • Haley Reinhart
  • Anna Nalick
  • The Smithereens
  • Gin Wigmore
  • Joan Jett and Cheap Trick
Who have you seen lately? Let us know!

I saw Billie Eilish Sunday night! She put on an amazing show. Energy for days. It was a blast. Got to bond with my 15 yo nephew more (I've taken my niece a lot of places, this was good aunt/nephew time) . I'm just a big a fan as he is. :)

Prior to Covid.. Greta Van Fleet also the Rock Hall of Fame 2019. I'll see Def Leppard everytime they come around and I couldn't miss their induction by none other than Brian May!

Davy Knowles is a great guitarist, I think that was 2019 too.

Does Broadway count? SIX the musical this past October and before that in 2019 Hadestown.

Great thread!

We saw Chicago a couple years ago. Most of the band is original which is amazing. You don't realize how many hits they had spanning several decades. They played one hour and fifty minutes solid, no breaks. These guys still have so much energy. I highly recommend getting tickets for Chicago if they pass through your area.

You're never too old!!

Had to check the T shirt. Last concert was the (excellent) Rush Clockwork Angels tour back in 2012 in the moderate sized Universal City venue which has since been replaced by a Harry Potter thing. So, nada recent. We did go a few months ago to a Pink Floyd Exhibition in Hollywood, which was awesome and is now over.

Roughly in order of most recent to later. I scrolled through my pictures and these are my last few years of concerts. Most were pre COVID except for the Chris Tomlin Christmas show which was just this past Christmas.

Chris Tomlin - Christmas Show at a large church.
Chris Tomlin - Same church but a standard show (got to meet him after the show because we support his charity.
Chris Tomlin - At Red Rocks. Red Rocks is absolutely a special venue.

Not a Chris Tomlin super fan, but the shows and venues were special.

Sarah McLachlan

Small outdoor venue. I’ve seen Sarah quite a few times.

David Byrne

DW not a fan so I went by myself. Was at a small venue and was just a fantastic show. The energy was level 10+.

David Gray

Another small venue show (seeing a pattern?). It was a theater in Cleveland, so it took an overnight trip. Really enjoyed that trip and show.

Jack Johnson

Went with DD. Surprised she wanted to go. Had a great time. We were about five rows back.

The Verve Pipe

Talk about a small venue. A friend of mine grew up with one of the band members so they played for her husband’s 50th birthday at a bar on the balcony to about 30 people. Oh yeah.

Concert going has definitely slowed down with COVID. Things are easing up, but I still try to stay away from indoor venues. This year, I may see Jack Johnson again. I’ll see Sarah anytime she’s in town. I have my eye on another trip to Red Rocks, but it will have to be a special artist.

Only concert scheduled is a gift from DD to see a comedy show - Tim Allen.

Saw the Eagles in 2020 right before the pandemic. Fantastic show, here in Atlanta. If that is the last show I ever see, I could live with that. It was that good.

Saw Springsteen twice here but can’t recall the years.

Still kicking myself for not seeing Tom Petty when I had the chance:mad:.

No more concerts for us as far as I am concerned. We were really looking forward to our last concert which was a few years ago. Def Leppard opening for Journey. Def Leppard put on a great show but we ended up standing the whole time even though we paid a lot of money for good seats up close because nobody would sit down. Then there was the annoying almost constantly screaming idiots in front us. Even though we had good earplugs in the screeching lady in front of us hurt our ears. Then Journey came on stage and seemed to crank the volume up to an unbearable level even with the earplugs in. It was not a good time and we left while Journey was still playing....Never again in a big venue..
We have had better luck at the smaller venues at the Indian casinos around us. I was able to see one of my favorite bands Poco along with two other bands there. They each did about 5 or 6 best of songs. That was pretty cool.
Roger Hodgson singer songwriter from Supertramp has come to the Indian casinos near us a couple of times and we saw him twice. Once time he had a small band with him and the other time it more of an accoustical performance with one other very talented guy. Those were really great concerts as it was more mature audience and the sound level was just right. He really put on a great show and seemed generally appreciative of where he was in life. He shared some of his journey with us...I would probably see him again if the opportunity came up.
Another one that stands out was Toto at an Indian casinos. Love Toto and they really know how to rock...was great to see them close up like that... GREAT show.
Toto and Journey are touring together this year but they are playing in the same arena that was too loud for last time so as much as I would love to see them going to pass to save our hearing.

Saw Chicago about 10 years ago. Old guys now, well, those that are left.

Side note:
I saw Chicago and the Beach Boys in Schaefer Stadium, Foxboro, MA. 1975 I think. The Beach Boys were considered "Oldies" and Chicago was thought of a band on its last leg, maybe the final tour.

Currently we go to see local bands. Some are tribute bands (for CSNY, Bob Seeger, etc). Others are local players that have been around and play cover songs and some original music.

The last "name" concert we went to (8 years ago) was Santana opening for Rod Stewart. Santana was SANTANA. Great.

Rod Stewart was not good. No, really bad. He even apologized.

We stopped during the pandemic but will start concerts again this spring. Non-pandemic times, we go out for live music pretty often - local bands at dive bars, ASAF band, symphonies, concert bands, rock bands coming to town, cover bands - whatever is around.

Pre-pandemic the national touring groups we saw in the recent past were Vanilla Fudge, The (Weight) Band, Imagine Dragons, Bush, The Fixx, REO, The Platters, Styx, Don Felder, Chicago, Joan Jett, Third Eye Blind, Silverson Pickups, Albert Cummings, Max Weinberg's Jukebox, Big Voodoo Daddy, The Whispers, Brit Floyd, and Alice Cooper.

I'm a big Supertramp and Rodger Hodgson fan. I'd love to see him in concert.

Oh, Chicago, The Beach Boys, Alan Parsons Project, Indigo Girls, the Happy Together Tour, Kenny Loggins, Moody Blues, Lifehouse, Jackson Browne, Honk, are the ones I can think of since 2016.

I tried for Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin, but those got cancelled a couple of times, and ditto for James Taylor and Jackson Browne.

Upcoming are Happy Together, Bonnie Raitt, and The Doobie Brothers, all in GA in June.

Considering The Eagles in Austin in May—which seat might could qualify me for the BTD thread.

I think we must have been at the same concert (in Dallas). Def Leppard was good, but I really went to see Journey and they were terrible, we left about 1/2 way through also. I think the guitarist ego required him to be turned up to 11 and it was painful on the ears.

Am curious, has his voice not aged well?

That was pretty much it. Obviously, you are not looking for "smooth" singing from Rod Stewart. But it was almost uncomfortable to listen to him.

He did claim to be ailing from a cold or something, but it sounded like more than that.

Anyway, who really expects a 70 year old performer to sound like he did at 30?

BTW, they we free tickets. DW won a game on the local radio.

That's exactly how we felt...way over the top volume on the guitar playing. Still don't know how the rest of the crowd could handle it.

Check out his website. Lots of good info there on and from him and links to videos. He also has a concert video available which is pretty good.

I'll check it out. I've been watching him on Youtube lately. I used to have a "Supertramp" T shirt I bought at one of their concerts when I was in college. My mom wasn't too happy about, even after I told her it was the name of a band.

Let's see:

-Bob Seeger in his farewell tour
-Dido in her first US tour in more than a decade
-Randy Bachman at a small venue
-Jeff Lynne's ELO
-Fleetwood Mac (band completely intact)
-Stevie Nick's
-Heart
-Emmylou Harris
-Leonid and Friends (a spot-on Chicago tribute band from Russia)
A few tribute bands
Perhaps a few others I'm not remembering

The last concert I went to was Bruce Springsteen at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, CT on July 20, 2005. The one before that was Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes in Cleveland, about 1988/89. And before that was Bruce Springsteen on August 4, 1981, at the Capital Centre in Washington DC. The young wife was with me for all three.

There were many more during my college days.
Have you heard of Bruce Springsteen's Wester Stars concert videos that was in theaters for a short time in 2019? I just loved everything about it from the music to the setting. To me it was an amazing experience. You can rent or buy it on Amazon or YouTube now. Bruce seems like a pretty cool old dude now...

They have a very deep songbook. I have seen them twice many years ago.

Having said that, the band historically had three voices: Robert Lamm (who founded the band), Terry Kath (died decades ago) and Peter Cetera, who has not been with the band for 30 years or so.

In fact, other than Lamm, James Pankow, Lee Loughnane and Walter Parazaider the rest of the band is new. Still very entertaining I'm sure.

But if you love Chicago, you should check out Leonid and Friends. They have been touring in the US. They perform Chicago's hits flawlessly, and also do some spot-on hits of folks like Earth Wind and Fire, Steely Dan and others.

It's a bit like seeing Chicago in the early days.
