Would ER in a heartbeat but....

I wouldn't let the comments posted in this thread talk you out of early retirement. You didn't provide enough details for anyone to give you accurate advice. Unless you have a lot of debt you may be able to cut your expenses enough to make early retirement very safe and reasonable. Check out...

Why would anyone buy bonds or bond funds right now?

Actually the 10 year treasury has risen quite a bit this year. I have a intermediate bond fund that's down around 5% for the year. Tips have gotten hammered recently.

Why would anyone buy bonds or bond funds right now?

I don't know if I'd go 100% equities as a replacement for bonds. Equities can fall much harder than a bond fund. PenFed has recently released a 5 year CD paying 3%. Tempting replacement for bonds. There is also I bonds but they are limited to $10k per year.

Retire earlier by taking a pay cut?

How would you possibly know which stock was going to go from $4 to $80? Good luck with that. Also not all publicly traded companies allow you to invest your 401k in their stock. My company does not even offer the ability to purchase company stock in your 401k.

35 yr old wake up call

I think that rental property is going to be a sweet asset for you in terms of early retirement. $20k a year in income already and that will only grow with time especially after the mortgage is paid off. I think of it like a pension with a COLA.

    Fear of FIRE

Look at this way, you are worth over 6 million dollars. If the market crashed and your entire portfolio declined 80%(highly unlikely) you would still be a millionaire.

    Last year of work--Dilemma

That's risky advice. At some employers a 6 month notice could easily turn into them firing you after 2 weeks. It depends on your position and how valuable you feel you are to the company. Many companies may not like your lame duck status.

    Last year of work--Dilemma

Personally I wouldn't be too concerned about accepting the new position with the knowledge you won't be staying long. In my career I've seen new employees quit at lunchtime of their very first day. I've seen many others not last a week. It happens all the time in corporate America. You...

    General Anesthesia / Memory Loss

My father is in his early 70's and just had a pacemaker put in. The day after he came home from the hospital he had no memory of being there and was convinced my mother was playing a joke on him. It's been about a month and he's still complaining about not being able to remember driving...

So close and yet so lost...:(

Nobody on this planet has a system that reliably returns 10%-15% a year. Do not quit your job based on this faulty assumption. Your 15% gain could quickly turn into a 15% loss and then where would you be?

    8 years out, hopefully

Welcome. I hope the palm reader's prediction is not playing a major role in your retirement decision.

    Doomer Portfolio

I don't think you should design your portfolio around one hypothetical scenario that may or may not happen. Smarter men than you or I have tried predict the future of the markets and have failed. A more prudent mindset is to accept that you can't predict the future movements of the markets and...

    Doomer Portfolio

It seems to me you are just trading one type of risk for another. If you held a short term bond fund and reinvested the dividends your downside risk would be minimal compared to what could happen to an emerging markets equity fund if the world economy blew up. Diversify, diversify, diversify.

    47 Reached $1M - My Feelings

I can relate. I recently found out there's a reasonable (but definitely not guaranteed) chance that I will coming into a decent amount of money sometime in the next 5 years. Just knowing that possibility exists makes my daily work life stress level decrease. It makes me realize that work can...
