Better customer service: Vanguard or Fidelity?

I see many of you recommending the two big vanguard funds quite often - Wellington and Wellesley. What are the funds most like these at Fidelity and are there ETFs at Fidelity that track similar w/out fees or a lock-up period?

43 and living life in NY & FL - Am I close to FIRE or far far away?

Ok. Yes, that makes more sense (you scarred the bejesus outta me for a minute [emoji23]). I will be 46 and more than half a year old when I retire so really it’s only 13 years until I hit 59.5. Regardless, I know nothing is 100% certain (not only the markets, but unforeseen expenses and life...

43 and living life in NY & FL - Am I close to FIRE or far far away?

I thought you were allowed to estimate taking 4% from the total nest egg, not just the taxable part, for the purposes of calculating whether it will provide enough yearly income? Would be strange if that wasn’t the case since you’ll have access to that taxable portion at some point down the line.

43 and living life in NY & FL - Am I close to FIRE or far far away?

Thanks HNL - really appreciate the advice and share your concerns. To answer your questions - 535K of the 1.7 mil is tax deferred (in a 401K and not accessible without penalty until 59.5). The remaining 1.165 mil are all taxable assets. The marriage thing really scares me and is definitely a...

43 and living life in NY & FL - Am I close to FIRE or far far away?

Understood. Which is why I didn't count the inheritance in my leaner expense plan. However, my father has a federal pension with healthcare for life and my sister-in-law is a nurse so I do not see a likely scenario where we will have to pay that much extra for LTC (my mother retired from her...

43 and living life in NY & FL - Am I close to FIRE or far far away?

Hi NHL Bill. Thanks for the encouragement. Seems like you're doing quite well. Congrats. First off, I'm not really planning for a 54 year retirement, as it's extremely doubtful that I'll live to 100 (nor do I want to). As for my expenses/spend rate, I have budgeted: -35,000 a year for...

43 and living life in NY & FL - Am I close to FIRE or far far away?

Hi everyone. It's been about a year and 5 months so I thought I'd check back in and provide an update (people seem to like those, I know I like reading them). So, I'm now currently at around 1.7 mil total in invested assets (a little over 2.0 mil NW, but I know not to count that). Most of the...

Retired in Florida or in the Planning Stages? Please share Here.

Check east of US 1 and west of the intracoastal. Still really close to beach and close to action of downtown. I actually like that area better than the beach (and you are literally minutes away from the beach). May want to look at pompano, lauderdale, Hollywood, etc.

Retired in Florida or in the Planning Stages? Please share Here.

My girlfriend's parents live in Hypoluxo, which is just south of West Palm. I have a place in downtown Ft. Lauderdale, which I love (i.e. more of a city, more to do, but also busier), but you may want to check out Hypoluxo, which is much quieter, but very nice and affordable, with a lot of 55+...

    Anyone here retire by 40?

I don’t think you’re alone in this - so many of us, including myself, have had the same experience (especially the bars and blondes :-) But, it’s never too late, you live and learn and we are all here now. Wasn’t able to retire BY 40, but I’m definitely shooting to retire IN my 40s.

    Anyone here retire by 40?

I think around your 40s is when a lot of people hit the wall - been working for 20 something years and begin to get burnt out and/ or sick and tired of the grind. So, maybe it’s not before 40, but more like in your 40s. If I had the ability (i.e. I knew financially I could make it work), I’d...

East or West Coast of South FL?

I'd recommend Ft. Lauderdale - great livable city, beautiful downtown, rivers and canals throughout (they call it the Venice of America), lots of restaurants, nightlife, walking city (you can get to everything downtown without a car), terrific beach, quick ride to Key Largo for diving (like 1.5...

    Share your FIRE Milestones - 2013- 2020

I was in the same boat as you these past few days. But, I just checked today and I'm back over $1.4M as of this afternoon. I'm also 70% to my mid-level FIRE goal of $2M  (1.75M on the lower side, 2.25/2.5 on the higher side).

Portfolio Management firms - consolidate or diversify

I also am in a semi-similar situation (Although not retiring yet) Or at least I’m thinking about using multiple brokerages or consolidating into one. I currently have my cash at Citibank, after tax brokerage at Morgan Stanley and 401k with Nationwide. I’m even thinking of opening another...

43 and living life in NY & FL - Am I close to FIRE or far far away?

You’re definitely on your way! And, given your attitude and willingness, I’m sure you’ll be able to make it (probably before schedule). That first 100 - 500k was definitely the hardest (for me and for many/ most others who say the same). After that, compunding and market returns really add fuel...
