30 YO wants to retire at 50...how am i doing?

My opinion is that the greatest derailment to any plan are things you don’t really know: 1. Kids that need more financial help than you think for a longer period of time. 2. Home upgrades 3. Vacations 4. Changes to your career that weren’t anticipated. 5. Compromises with spouse on how...

Hello! 33, Father-to-be, Lawyer, Looking for ER in 15 years

Hi! How old are your kids now? My only little advice is that kids are very expensive especially as they get older. College, undeclared/switching majors, dropped classes, 5-7 year college plan, unsure of career path, sports, summer camp, weddings, helping them move out, student debt, crashed...

Share Your FIRE Milestones - 2021

Yes about 500k is home equity. Our home value has increased by almost $200k in 4 years. I want to use it as the final rip cord when we are in our 80s to pay for rent and/or long term care. It should be well over $1 million by then.

Finally hit $1 million-ended year close to $1.2 million, net worth $1.8 million. Debt is on the decline as well- we only use one cc now.

FIREd @ 26, bored to absolute tears!

Spot on 1000%. When I read some of these posts I’m saddened that others haven’t experienced the same enjoyment I’ve had in my career. Ive always had a good life/work balance and have been a high earner. I’m 57 and I’ve grown to appreciate any time I have off and the little things in life like...

I can personally attest that is true. A smaller boat is less risk.

    What to do?

This thread reminds me of my situation. I was hooked up to a Holter monitor 3 times when I was with my old company and since I left to start my own thing competing against them, never! I had far less available cash, and no current income from my wife as you do, and I had the first of 3...

    Hello from Manhattan

Did you ever think of commuting from So Ct, Long Island, Westchester or NJ? My expenses are substantially lower than yours with similar income. This might be an interim step for you to see if you could live with lower expenses without moving too far away. I would take a look again at your...

Out of the shadows after six months of lurking

The comments from these posts are very helpful to me. I sometimes feel like since I have to work anyway, even if I downsized, the monthly payment would be the same because I would have to pay down the smaller mortgage in the new house. I wonder if the price appreciation on our present house...

Out of the shadows after six months of lurking

Welcome Catman! How did you feel about the downsizing? Your family still sounds young, and my kids are in college and I'm having trouble giving up my larger home, because I always feel like we need the space still. I'm always curious if the numbers really work out, especially since you are...

Friend looking to RE for med reasons

I would see if his wife can maybe work a low stress job with benefits, to ease the impact of health care costs. It sounds like he doesn't need 24 hour care right now, but could buy them a few years until Medicare. But I agree with others, I would wake up every day to try to enjoy as much as I...

    Taxes on Roth in retirement?

I agree with the above, I have both a Rollover IRA and a SEP IRA, and exceed the income guidelines, so to me this just screams "NO". My accountant never suggested it, and he always told me to do a SEP IRA but now I understand his caution. Sent from my iPad using Early Retirement Forum

    Really late bloomer

I would try to make sure you have a good accountant so you can take advantage of your income and your dependents to minimize your taxes. Even if you can save $1000.00 this year, it could be worth $2000.00 when you retire, so it's never too late. You seem like a resourceful person so I think...
