    Keeping emergency cash at home

Living in coastal Carolina, the most likely scenario is a hurricane that knocks out power for a week or so. For that I keep $1k to $1.5k in the gun safe in $20’s and smaller. During those times you may need the service of a good ol’ Boy with a pickup and a chain saw, and he don’t take Amex. Nor...

    Quicken moving to subscription model

Well, thank you all for the Welcome Back. I was thinking that I need to come up with a tall tale to go with my absence. Maybe something to tie into the scar between my eyes from Mohs surgery, such as black ops contractor fighting pirates for the last decade. Anyway I chose Moneydance as it was...

    Quicken moving to subscription model

Question re: your bank account info on Quicken I have taken an extended hiatus form these forums but I am back now. Based on this thread I have decided to mothball my Quicken 2016 and move to Moneydance. Trying out the 30 day trial version with a few minor glitches that I worked out so it...

Anyone make their own pizza? Is it worth the time, effort and clean up?

I do not make my own pizza but a neighbor does and they are great as you can be more adventurous. He had a bunch of guys over one afternoon and he helped us make our own. With a goodly quantity of beer and shooting the bull it was a memorable afternoon. Good skill to have, I say.

    Quick Quicken Question

Thanks. I will look into the pension payment category option as it would keep it separate from regular income, or maybe not and consider it a paycheck as my financial picture is not that complex.

    Quick Quicken Question

I am setting up Quicken for Mac. What a PITA! Where do you record regular pension 1099R payments? List >>Paychecks? That don't seem right to me. Of course the .PDF user guide has only two references to "pension", neither applicable. Help has never heard of it as does the support website. Thanks!

    Dang dogs.

Speaking of walks, I walked my previous Golden Retriever every day of his life for 16 1/2 years, no matter what the weather or condition. That was his choice, not mine. The dog's paws would freeze in the Chicago winter slush and he would troop on happily. One day he broke his rear leg chasing a...

Consumer Reports: Feb 2007 "Simplify Your Financial Life"

Please watch that center line in that 130 mph sweeping curve. You are likely to drift wide and center punch a Harley with me on it.

    New Shrimpy Wall St Journal

I think The WSJ did a lot of research to make it relative and hip to the crackberry crowd, but I think it stinks. On second thought I think it s**cks. These are my reasons: The letters to the editor are stuck somewhere in the back after the corporate jet listings. The quality of these letters...

    Are you a musician?

Inspired by Duane Eddy, Link Wray and Bo Diddley as a young teen, pestered my folks to get me an electric hollow body Epiphone (which I still have). Taught myself how to play which severely hampered my prrogressing any further than a basic lead guitar in a kick-ass three piece party band in...

How much did you spend in 2006?

Splitting sub-accounts out of Wal-Mart receipts? Probably not worth it. We have an accounting bucket called Food and Household Supplies in which we record all Wal-mart, Kroger and the like. If something is obviously different, such as a TV, we take that out. This bucket was $740 / month in 2006...

    Absentee house owner?

Thanks everybody for the advice. Didn't think about the house warranty, I do not think they are that expensive and maybe I can get the seller to cough it up. I know we have paid it similarly in the past. Just like everything else I guess you have to check and double check who you deal with.

    Absentee house owner?

DW and I have decided on the Roanoke (VA) valley area for our retirement, at least for the initial phase. We are 20 months away from pulling the trigger and have been looking at the already affordable real estate there dropping some in the nest few months. This may be a buying opportunity for...
