What is the last thing you ordered from Amazon?

Pegs for my cribbage board. Got tired of using broken tooth picks. Two weeks ago it was an antenna for the control module to my hunting dog's training collar. Through friction and vibration, the antenna had unscrewed itself off the controller unit while walking out in the field and I didn't...

Your oldest appliance, just for fun

I purchased a small, palm sized AA battery AM, FM, short wave radio, brand name "Intersound," at a German store in Dec. 1990. I was stationed in Germany with the 1st Armored Division and we were about a week away from deploying to Saudi Arabia to get ready to liberate Kuwait from the Iraqis. I...

Congrats on your retirement! I'm surprised your dogs let you sleep in that late, ours get us up between 5 am and 6 am every morning!

All the schools are closed in our area as well, with a unique exception; our local high school has an "e-curriculum" assigned to all students for today, so snow days are no longer an escape from school work. What a bummer!

The Best "Simple Things" in Retirement?

It is -20F outside right now, wind chill. We are supposed to get up to 7 inches of snow tonight through tomorrow with 35MPH winds. I will wake up around 7, read the newspaper and drink coffee for an hour or two. Then, DW and I will make breakfast. Since tomorrow's highs will be in single...

    Are you retired?

Yes, happily into our 4th year now. Retired at age 48. Original goal was 42, which was possible, but would not have given us the desired standard of living. So, I guess we did 6 OMY's.

The Best "Simple Things" in Retirement?

I used to dread Sunday evening, now I often forget that it IS Sunday evening.

This is a long-term issue, been going on for over a decade. I have these bouts 3-4 times a year. I haven't seen a chiropractor as my insurance doesn't cover that care, but I now have an osteopathic physician available and will see her in a few weeks. I am fit and exercise regularly, but my...

    Snakebite!

I hunt upland birds in Colorado and our dogs run for hours out on the prairie. A snake encounter is my greatest fear. We'd be heartbroken if one of our dogs died from a snake bite. We have both dogs vaccinated with the rattlesnake vaccine: 2 shots initially, several weeks apart, and then an...

Mortgage Question - NOT about paying it off.

If no additional discretionary funds were available and I wanted to pay off the car early then I would temporarily only invest in the 401(K)s up to whatever match I was receiving and use the remainder to pay off the car early. Since you are already investing at the catch up level I would...

I wish I knew then what I know now........

I would say learn to be patient. Too many times I felt like I had to do something when doing nothing would have led to a much better outcome.

Computer Model: Long Term Thinking Lead to Greater Happiness

I guess I'm lucky in my choice of my life partner (or more appropriately, I'm lucky that my life partner chose me ;D ) because DW and I balance each other out. My brain is wired to be a long-term planner and I can't help but look towards the future and think of likely consequences of decisions...

    Social Security at age 62

I am happy to be wrong and in this case it appears that I am, to my benefit, so thank you for pointing the error of my analysis. I have confused the difference between a survivor benefit and a spousal benefit: I found this on wealthmanagement.com: Social Security Survivor Benefits Simplified...
