    What is your Savings Program?

Automatic 403b for me and 401k for dw each pay period. Manual full contribution to roth ira for me and dw at first of year. Skim off excess from checking account to vanguard or high interest savings. It's worked pretty good so far.

    I'm in pretty bad shape...

I'll echo the sentiment that there is a lot of good advice on this board. You are fortunate to have discovered your situation at 27 and realized that you can do something about it. I have a brother that finally realized his situation at the age of 46. He took action and it has changed his...

    Do you financially mentor?

Unsolicited advice? Yes. I try to get everyone I work with to invest in the 403b, at least to get the matching funds. I just can't keep my mouth shut when 100% matching funds available. Where family is concerned, no unsolicited advice. My suggestions have been ignored or shot down too many times.

How low can you (the Dow) go, and when is the time to buy?

You don't have to be in his boat or yacht to understand what he writes in his letter to the shareholders. I'm not in his boat by any means but I've learned a lot from his letters over the years, such as this: "Only those who will be sellers of equities in the near future should be happy at...

    One Year Retired

Poboy, congrats on the one year anniversary. I agree with you on the college sports. No better bang for the buck in my opinion. I spend 7 or 8 saturdays per year walking to Jordan-Hare for the game, and the other sports are great too. Basektball team was much improved this season. I go to...

How low can you (the Dow) go, and when is the time to buy?

Yeah. Most people who are still contributing to their 401ks and Roth IRAs are still working. Folks who are still working and saving for retirement should be OK with the market dropping and staying undervalued for a number of years. Of course I would like to take full credit for that idea, but I...

24 year old trying to get to millionaire by 35, punch holes in me plan

I didn't read through the thirteen pages of replies, but if you are 24 making 100k, my advice would be to keep the 100K job unless a secure higher paying job comes along, max out the 401K and the Roth IRA and live as far below your means as you can. If you can do this for 10 years, you are set.

How low can you (the Dow) go, and when is the time to buy?

No one ever seems to like watching the markets go down, but if you know you will be a buyer (401ks and iras), it's a good thing if the market goes down and stays undervalued for a number of years. Where is the market going? I have no idea and I don't care.

    reassure me

Vanguard will probably give you more options and at a lower cost than any 401K plan. I have rolled over every 401K plan from previous employers to Vanguard without a problem. The only one I didn't roll over was already in vaguard in a closed fund, so I left it there. You shouldn't have any...

"In fact, the mass exodus in equities..." Why I don't listen to the mass media

Re: "In fact, the mass exodus in equities..." Why I don't listen to the mass me I LOVE when the fear mongers use the term "carnage" to describe what happened to the market. Carnage is second only to "bloodbath". Is a two or three percent drop really that bad? Carnage and bloodbath should be...

    Feb 27 damage

I think I just had my first five digit loss day. No problem. I can remember back to my first four digit loss day around 1992 or 93. I remember thinking, "I'm sure this won't be the last time I lose over 1,000 in a day." Now I lose or gain that much on a slow day. I guess I should look forward...

    Curious about Monikers

dusk_to_dawn comes from a line in an Aerosmith song - Dream On. The past is gone it went by like dusk to dawn So dusk to dawn is a reminder that life is short. ER when you can; you may not get the chance later.

Who uses an investment advisor to help?

Wow, those are some interesting statistics. 63% of investors use advisors......I'll bet that percent is lower among this group. It would be interesting to see a poll. I don't think the folks in this forum are "your average investor". I am self-directed.

Poll: I'm in my 30's and have almost a million, what should I do next?

In your 30's with almost a million........I would say keep doing what you are doing. Read some books like Bernstein's four pillars, coffeehouse investor, only investment guide you'll ever need, millionaire next door, etc. You don't need to read every book out there on personal finanace, but...
