401K or IRA, or does it matter?

You can take SEPPs from an IRA starting at 55 if you wanted too.

    NW crossed a million

Thanks. Looking back at my spreadsheet, Oct '15, basically two years ago was when my NW first crossed $700k, so that's definitely achievable.

    NW crossed a million

Thanks all for the congrats and the tips on bridging the gap until 59.5. Time to start running lots of calcs on retiring at 45

I'd forgotten about SEPP, thanks for the reminder. No employer stock to take advantage of that scenario.

    NW crossed a million

About a year ago I started looking at that, I don't think I "need" any more deposits into 401k... of course I'm not going to say no to the match  It would be great to retire/stop working for someone else by 45, but after tax is currently around $315k... not bad but need much more to...

    NW crossed a million

Thanks Blue Collar Guy, it's a good start and I'm pretty lucky, but it still feels like a long ways to go... based on what 25 year old me thought having 1mil would feel like.

    NW crossed a million

Spreadsheet reads $1,000,944.10. A substantial 401k deposit should happen any day which will provide a decent buffer, but I imagine I'll get to cross it a few more times in the near term. FWIW, the timeline to this point: July '05: ~0 Nov '09: NW 108k Nov '13: NW 504k Sept '17: NW 1mil...

    Recession's Mark on Millennials

IDK... If the price of something is outrageous stop paying it. I suspect based on the nature of this board, most people would assume what bimmers and benzs cost is outrageous (or at least not worth it) so they don't pay it, they opt for the honda or something. I just looked up the state...

    Recession's Mark on Millennials

Insult? Read my post above... the "woe is me" is referring to the attitude that is becoming more rampant in our society regarding things just being too hard or impossible now. You attribute it taking six years to get an engineering degree now to the work load... I doubt the workload is any...

    Recession's Mark on Millennials

Not at all, I did, my sister did, probably 1/3 of the engineers in my jr and sr courses did. Seems like more of the "woe is me" stuff... I did undergrad in 4 and MS in 1.5.

    Recession's Mark on Millennials

As a millennial (I guess...) I have a very bright outlook, the more pervasive the "woe is me" attitude the easier for me to set myself apart from the rest of the herd.

    Share your FIRE Milestones - 2013- 2020

That's a great start, you must have been socking away more than 15k a year initially to get such a good start? FWIW, I was around 200k at 27, and I'm a few months away from 35 now and at $913k, if you come close to keeping pace with what you've done to date you'll hit $1mil well before 40.

    Share your FIRE Milestones - 2013- 2020

I might be ahead of schedule for hitting $1mil, did my monthly checkup and I'm at $913.5k. Now looks like I COULD hit the mark in the summer, more than a year earlier than my projection 4 years ago. Of course the market might have other plans... I turn 35 in May and first kid is going be...

    Share your FIRE Milestones - 2013- 2020

I haven't posted in a couple years but it looks like I'm still on track for $1M by Nov. '18 with current NW $791k. I'll be 36 in Nov. '18, so the potential to be FI by 45 still seems possible, fingers crossed.

Always cool seeing other peoples data points, thanks. From $500k to $1M in 5 years is fast IMO, kudos. I think I could potentially hit $1M four years from now, but of course you never know what might happen. That's the goal though!
