I feel I may have a problem with hoarding money..

There's only one rule - you and your wife to be need to discuss your wedding plans and come to a joint decision that you're both happy with. Don't bother making any other plans until this happens. There are lots of good idea's in this thread. Some people like large weddings, others (including...

The High Cost of Early Retirement

I've read a few Yahoo Finance articles and most offer very general advice that seems to be rehashed over and over. I think many of these Yahoo Finance authors spend more time thinking up creative titles for their columns that will generate the most clicks, and very little time actually...

My first post and it's a dumb question!

Congrats on your wife retiring - my wife retired 4 years ago but I'm still working. A couple of helpful tips: 1. If you haven't already done so, check with state's pension plan office and have them detail how her and your health benefits will change in retirement. 2. Is she entitled to be paid...

Maybe old news but pretty sobering regardless !

I don't believe the dollars quoted in most studies - I think most people under-report or knowingly give false information - to protect their identity. On the other hand, I think the numbers in the Fidelity study are truly representative of actual retirement balances.

    Boomer Retirement Market

I have a difficult time believing anything stated in the article - the quoted tax rate is much too low and the tax (federal, state, etc) is never defined. From the article "The average income in 2010 for all Americans (using a 50-year-old boomer as a reference point) was about $62,500 gross...

    wireless tv to computer network?

I have two first generation AppleTV's running Boxee. It works with most (not all) standard definition video. The first generation AppleTV hardware just isn't fast enough to display HD content thru Boxee. I also have an Acer Aspire Revo connected to the TV. This is a small PC (7 x 7 x 2 in) that...

How do you plan for change in Medicare?

I think this blog post sums up my view "I don't want to be left out, so here's my 2 cents: Boomers -- those are the people born between 1946 and 1964 -- are about 75 million strong. Unlike other segments of the population, they vote. That gives this proposal a snowball's chance on a July day...

    Early Retirement For Distressed Teachers

I think the smart thing to do is to go on sick leave and get the operation done. If you're still thinking of early retirement - check your benefits first. In some states, teachers need at least 25 years of work to get free health insurance during retirement. Otherwise you'll need to pay the...

Use Tax Saver Credit during early retirement?

I was reading up on the Tax Saver Credit What Is the Tax Saver's Credit? | eHow.com and while my AGI is too high to qualify while I'm working, I'm wondering if I could use this after I early retired (in my 50's)? I plan on living off CD's during my early retirement and during this period the...

    Pension question and resentment

There's plenty of resentment to go around - you've just read some of the stories. I believe the vast majority of those receiving a pension are honest folks, but a few percent of this group has managed to scam the system with large amounts of overtime during their final two or three years -...
