    Not fond of annuities

Calling Mr. Mathjak… Thanks for your help here. ... like all annuity's with guaranteed growth rates , you never own the additional money which you can take , it just sits in a separate account where it acts as a base amount for annuitizing. I very much suspect that what I have is what you’re...

    Live for Less Elsewhere

I lived in very urban India for a year. Hoping to go back; quite frankly, hoping to retire there. But the residency issue for a non-Indian complicates matters. Sri Lanka, often thought of as a calmer, gentler version of India, offers permanent residency to expats. I am in love with India…...

Wade Pfau- How are annuities better (different) from bonds?

Those that do have SPIAs or are not entirely averse to having, would you have recommendations for a low-cost provider? I’m thinking of a purchasing a SPIA or perhaps a DIA (5-year deferred) from ImmediateAnnuities.com soon. Thanks for your suggestions, jfb

    ... but isn't the Wellington closed ??

I keep reading of people going for the Vanguard Wellington fund (VWELX) and would like to do so myself. I've already bought into the Wellesley as many here recommend and would like to put about the same amount in the Wellington. But I keep reading that it is closed to new investors. Is this...

Immediate annuity (in 5 years time) or a 5-year deferred now? (Sorry)

Thanks guys, I plan to take a look at Millionaire Teacher. Mathjak, I appreciate your charts and graphs... a bit over my head, but I think I read that you see some benefit to the 5-year deferred. unno2002, I’ve got a couple of very, very small places abroad that rent pretty easily – to...

Immediate annuity (in 5 years time) or a 5-year deferred now? (Sorry)

Thank you one and all for your input. The annuity would be fixed (not variable); I'm on my own, alas -- but no heirs to consider. And I'd go for the deferred, 5-year. Tax-wise, I'd never be above the 15% bracket. I'll have very, very little coming to me in the way of SS. I've worked overseas...

Immediate annuity (in 5 years time) or a 5-year deferred now? (Sorry)

The immediate annuity ($100,000) would pay about $477 monthly whereas the deferred-for-5-year one would pay $622 or a yearly $1,740 more.

Immediate annuity (in 5 years time) or a 5-year deferred now? (Sorry)

Yeah... my numbers aren't right. Oops, my figures above reflect a $200,000 investment (not $100,000). Thank you for your responses. As for interest rates going up… Seems like we’ve been praying for it so many years now.

Immediate annuity (in 5 years time) or a 5-year deferred now? (Sorry)

I’ve managed to save a good deal but have never been that good at handling my own investment accounts. Furthermore, I do rather desire some predictability. Eventually, I’d be OK with putting about half, or more, of my worth into an annuity – either an immediate annuity when I turn 62 or, in...

like to think I could get something right...

Thanks again for your thoughts on the matter. And yeah, the more reading I do, the more I'm beginning to suspect that those details may indeed be devilish. All the best to you, jfb

like to think I could get something right...

Thanks again, everybody. I’m attempting to have the 5%-rate-on-new-money question reconfirmed, as well as some queries about surrender terms, and the ramifications of any changes made to the annuity. I live and work overseas and don’t have the contract here with me at present, so will have to...

like to think I could get something right...

Thanks one and all PB4uski and REWahoo, thank you both for your advice here. It’s my understanding that the Lincoln annuity I have can be added to and, when the anniversary of the inception date comes around one year later, the new monies will begin to accrue the same 5% interest that the...

like to think I could get something right...

Thanks, Sarah Thank you for your response. Yeah, I think that, if anything's added to the annuity, it'll be a much smaller amount. Thanks again and best to you, jfb

like to think I could get something right...

55 already and all too single – no wives, no dependents and nary a friend to turn to. Hoping to retire to something that I like (much, much lower-paying, alas) in a couple of years. My question is this: I’ll soon have the opportunity to add about $100,000 at a 5% rate of interest to a...
