safety of accessing accounts on public wireless

As others have already said you should be safe if your connection is over https (SSL). However, there is another step you should take to verify the identity of the site you are connected to. In order to check, just click on the little lock in the lower corner of the browser and look at the SSL...

Online Fraud -- how can I protect myself.

The thing is that I can't be sure that this is the merchant to lost control of my information. PayPal told me that the fraudster had my credit card number, and billing and shipping addresses. I looked over my statement and realized that I had given this information to another vendor just a few...

Online Fraud -- how can I protect myself.

I didn't expect much from PayPal, but they were responsive and cooperative. I only had to wait for a few minutes to speak with someone and they immediately told me what happened, and closed the account. They even gave me a detailed description of the item that was purchased. I was surprised...

Online Fraud -- how can I protect myself.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll will look into the credit freeze. I don't think it was my computer that was compromised. I have two firewalls, one external, and the XP firewall, run AVG once in awhile, and don't do anything risky. Although, the thing that really bugs me is that there is no...

    Rebalance now?

I've been rebalancing on the big down days. The problem is that if the market continues to go down you will lose more. Buying at lower prices helps me to better cope with the losses in my portfolio.

    Upgrading Laptop Hard Disk

I've found WinDirStat to be very useful in situations like this. It scans your HD and creates a map that you can use to find large files and directories astray (dvd rips, movie downloads, cd copies, ect). I also delete old $ntUninstall directories from c:\windows. These allow you to...

    Anyone considering tax-loss selling?

The nice thing about the mutual funds is that have your trade executed at the end of the day, so are less impacted by market volatility. With ETFs it might be better to wait for the market to calm down, or risk loss, like I had.
