Greg, I read the article and it was pretty pursuasive not to mention depressing.

I'm not yet FIREd. But it means I will be able to quit working when I want to and to be able to do a fair amount of traveling. Right now I would be able to stay home all of the time, but what fun is that?

Good article with a lot of common sense.

How can you decrease withdrawal in year two by 50,000? You started with a 70K withdrawal then decresed it by 46K in year 1 leaving a net of 24K. Decreasing it again by 50K doesn't make sense (unless you are adding to the protfolio).

ctech, Welcome to the board.  You should be able to get all the advice you need.  Just ask away.

It was an interesting article but it didn't give any kind of percentage breakdown between stocks and bonds.

G. Sounds like you have a pretty good start on FIRE. Take your time and look around for some type of employment you like to do. That should take some of th stress and boredom out of your daily life.

Martha, Does that mean if I retire from my job (I am already 55) I can take a one time distribution to pay off the home loan before I transfer the 401(k) to an IRA?

I just looked at the link to the Mark Hulbert site. In the long run it seems you could get almost the same results with VFINX and not have to worry about annual trading costs.

Martha, I am 55 and would like to retire by 60 but I would like to pay off the home loan before I retire. I am still working at the job with the 401(k).

Does anyone know if you can use a 401(k) distribution to pay off a home loan without incurring a penalty?
