    Problem w/ bogleheads.org site?

They saw it coming, alerting people to the fact their server was in the projected path of the storm.

    What's holding you back?

Prefer the work activity to some of the other things I do (internet, a bit too much beer, stupid tv.) Yes, of course, there are better things to do, but I noticed I do not do them. Being self employed, with busy and slow times, I got many opportunities to test it.

Taking an indefinite break from the board

I took a break too, and there was a reason -- something I experienced here and said it was not worth addressing with all the rest of life to live. Too small to spend time on, but annoying enough to remember. Came back today because I missed it.

How are you like/not like your father?

Dad and I both have green eyes, we're both soft spoken, and we worked in the same profession. Unlike Dad, I could never stay in the same job for decades or ever want to. And I am much more physically active than Dad ever was. Mom was always the one to run and play.

The Death of the Fringe Suburb

I deleted a post I made because the paragraph breaks disappeared, and it looked like one long paragraph. Anyone else run into that?

Renting or buying? What is best for a second home.

I have a century old house in a city where I do some semi-retired part time work, self-employed. I also have a roughly 30 year old 650 sq. foot cabin in the country on three acres, about 80 miles from my city house. I can take a business expense for using space as a home office in both...

Renting or buying? What is best for a second home.

I own a second home, but it's for reasons that work well for me. I like to be able to get away impulsively when I want to. That is harder to arrange if I am renting. And I have two dogs that I want to take with me. I still also go on vacation to other places as much as I used to before...

    Levels of possessions

Typical American. But the early examples on this thread hardly touched on my possessions. I think for me the insights come from spending the years from 30.5 to 49.5 in the same house. In my 30's, I was buying and buying. At 40 to 43, I donated things to people who were burned out, and to...

    I know...I know...

You asked. I'd wait. But your question surprises me a little because we had some down days when you could have gotten in at better prices. I say wait for another one.

    Best places to retire

Did anyone here decide a northern place, with seasonal cold, was a good place to retire? I'm asking because most of these "best" places are not near me, and when I think of retiring I look at one of the other northern states. (Close to where I want to get back to about once a month.) Just...

Yes I'll Help! or No Thanks!

I have Firefox 8.0.1, with AdBlockPlus, but not NoScript if that's an add on.

Yes I'll Help! or No Thanks!

That doesn't work for me either, with Firefox.

Poll: How Long Do You Keep a PC/Mac These Days?

Midpack, I misunderstood your poll question. I saw how long did you keep.... And then did not see how old is your most recent.... For me, those are different questions. My oldest Mac is very old, and the one I am typing on now is about 9 years old and is great. It's my primary. But, I...

    Dog Training . . .

I got my dog at 18 months. He flunked out of guide dog training school and I had been on a wait list there for 4 years, for a flunked out dog after my dog died four years earlier. (A blind friend told me about it, so I had signed up.) My turn came for this young beautiful dog.... He came...

    Hardwood Floors

P.s. I think I got the wood and put it in place, and he nailed. It wasn't hard. You'd have to ask Dad why not. :) Dad planned to be an architect, but became a lawyer. I forgot why. (and he didn't use a nail gun. He said Kat, this nail has to go there, or something like that...
