    New Shingrx Shingles Vaccine

DH and I just got our second shots a little over 5 hrs. ago. I don't want anyone touching my upper arm (it's sore), but other than that all is well. We are not yet on Medicare so both shots for each of us were covered 100% except for a minor $11.69 administrative fee. I think it's...

Am I missing something about Medicare costs?

I have heard Boomer Benefits mentioned/recommended more than once on retiree forums so I decided to check out the reviews on them. It seems people love them (real reviews or not?) or hate them (obviously real reviews). Please let us know good or bad any future experiences that you have with them.

A real quandary....how to spend it all

Since DH retired, we have spent freely. DH has purchased a couple of new guitars. He has taken up hunting and shoots trap. We replaced my 15 yr. old Lexus with a new Lincoln MKC AWD. We have replaced DH's 15 yr. old Toyota Tundra 2WD with a new Toyota Tundra TRD 4WD. We purchased a new...

How much to budget for retirement home

I guess it depends on the person. We sold our "dream retirement home" in a very upscale neighborhood (south SF Bay Area) and moved to a VERY rural area outside of Reno. The change has been a breath of fresh air.

    Did you relocate after FIRE?

Someone asked me how long it took me to adjust to living in NV. I told them, "less than a nanosecond". We really enjoy living here.

    Did you relocate after FIRE?

It definitely became too much for us and was really what prompted us to look out of state. I had lived in CA my entire life and thought I would never leave, but am so glad that we took the leap.

    Did you relocate after FIRE?

We moved to a very rural mountain community about 10 miles outside of Reno, so everything you need (shopping, dining, concerts, comedy shows, sports, an airport, etc.) and are all very close, but at home we see wild horses roaming around. Unlike the Bay Area you don't have to fight crazy...

    Did you relocate after FIRE?

We bought our retirement dream home when DH was transferred by megacorp to what would be his last "assignment". Two years after he retired we decided to leave CA and relocate to NV. I can't believe how big a difference the move has made in our life - not just for the cost savings (our property...

What age would each of you define as “early retirement?”

As we were working, we defined early retirement as age 55 because that was the first year that DH could receive a pension. He retired at age 56 so not as early as planned.

Thoughts on money, finances and life

!!! If you REALLY want to do that (and subconsciously you might not), give yourself an assignment. Go out and spend on something you might not otherwise that is not super expensive, but that you would enjoy. For us it has been dining out. We go out now at least a couple of times a month...

Thoughts on money, finances and life

This is us. Getting in the habit of getting the best value for our money (for decades) is what helped us get to FIRE. We don't need to do it anymore, but why pay more than you have to, especially when it doesn't take much time or effort to do.

    Cash Back Credit Cards?

We use (3) credit cards. Citi Double Cash 2% on everything Bank of the West 3% on groceries Citi Costco 4% on gas, 3% on dining I used to love the Chase card, but stopped using it once they went to quarterly categories. I cannot train my DH to switch from one card to another 4 times a year.

Retirees, does SS cover all your needs?

No, because we are not yet on Medicare and health insurance is outrageous. It's a darn good thing that we are FI, otherwise this retirement thing would be a real drag. We spent almost $19K in medical (premiums + deductible and OOP) and over $4K in dental (no dental insurance) in 2018. When...

    Zinc Lozenges Stopped Bad Cold

I've been taking zinc at the first sign of a cold (usually a dry or scratchy throat for me). I buy the tablets in the vitamin section of the store. I think they are less expensive than the lozenges.

How much do you spend on Groceries?

For 2018, we averaged $250/mo. plus $50/mo. thru November. I tend to meal plan around the ads and if something that we use regularly is on sale, I stock up so that helps keep costs down. The plus $50/mo. is a guestimate of what we might spend on average per month on food items at Costco. I...
