    2024 Travel Plans

We pushed the Greece trip to September in favor of a Caribbean island hopping trip. St John, Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda and Anegeda. First visit to Anegeda. Have not been to Virgin Gorda in 25 years since an epic stay at Bitter End Yacht Club. We will visit there but staying more mid-island...

Good friend just died of Pancreatic Cancer

Saddened to hear this Harllee. So sorry for your loss and that of your friend's family.

    Basic NW and Accounting Question.

Well, if I were accounting for my investments and issuing financial statements to myself, and I purchased an annuity for $500k (large chain of implausible "ifs"), I would not record a $500k expense. I would find that to be illogical and inconsistent with my status as a "going concern". So I...

    Airline mileage programs

I'm AA lifetime AAdvantage gold. It is nice. Most of our points travel these days is on domestic American booked using British Airways Avios. Still get a lot of value that way. And still get premium seats, free checked bags etc.

Programming a replacement Remote Key Entry fob

When I lose something, I go to the last place I knew I had it and retrace steps from there, talking my way through. It works.

    Basic NW and Accounting Question.

I do not dislike accounting. It can just provide answers that may be accurate but not very useful.

Anyone negotiate a "severance" in non-RIF times?

Well, one other interesting point my old CEO would dust off when, say, we wanted some dispensation from our controlling investor. Should we request it ? "Well, we know what the answer will be if we never ask" he liked to point out, accurately.

    Basic NW and Accounting Question.

I did not notice anyone arguing for new authoritative accounting pronouncements. But this does remind me of the balloonist who lost his way in a storm after which his balloon landed and came to rest in a newly plowed field. He asked the only person within earshot, "hey can you tell me where I...

What If Fed Rate Hikes Are Actually Sparking US Economic Boom?

Higher rates slow economic activity. Most consumers are net debtors, not net savers. And just because the economy is still growing nominally (though slowly) does not mean higher rates have not slowed economic activity. In fact if you look at the path of growth since hikes started the...

Anyone negotiate a "severance" in non-RIF times?

Not without leverage and you do not seem to have any. Anything they give you would be a bonus though, would it not? I retired at a time of my choosing and did not receive jack crap for it, though I was an exec and have crafted lots of severance packages. No regrets whatsoever. You can't...

    Basic NW and Accounting Question.

I would value it initially at what I paid for it. Over time I would value it at the present value of expected payments. Again, I am a going concern. I have no reason to assume I will die today and thus value something I just bought for thousands of dollars paradoxically at zero. And I do not...
