    Monthly Grocery Expenditure

You asked about groceries: I spend about $600 per month on groceries which includes fresh fruit & veg; meat and fish, dairy; frozen, tinned and dry goods; cleaning supplies; TP and pet food. Our household is composed of 2 adults, one small dog.

Where to travel alone but still be very safe?

Come to Australia. Brisbane, Melbourne, Darwin, Adelaide, Perth or our capital city CANBERRA. Sydney is a bit dodgy though. Australia is a very safe country to visit and we all speak English.

    Who Are Your Friends?

Having moved a lot during school years and in adulthood I tend to befriend people quickly and have formed friends through shared workplaces, hobbies and a lot of our neighbors have become long lasting friends. I see a trend with us having similar likes and dislikes but I find most people I have...

    Australia Trip

Be warned that we (I am an Aussie) are currently experiencing bush fires over most of the east coast from Cairns to Sydney. You may not enjoy yourselves due to the amount of smoke in the air. Also please be patient when out and about in the tourist towns because we are experiencing labour...

Favorite Books/Websites About Life After Retirement

Don't remember the title and author but there was a book I read about 12 years before retiring that inspired me greatly. The book was written by a former policeman who bought a pop top camper trailer after retiring and spent years traveling all over America with his wife. They kept their home...

Shocking Price to Launder a Comforter!

If you wash the cover regularly then perhaps all you need to do is hang the comforter outside on a sunny, breezy day and let the sun sterilize it for you and the breeze fluff it up. I wouldn't spend $50 washing a comforter, that's for sure.

Butter: store it cold or room temp?

In the fridge. Living in a warm climate butter will turn to liquid and quickly go rancid, but is quite spreadable within a few minutes if a small amount is cut from the block before use.

    Home Ownership History

1st house: We paid $36,000 in 1990. Borrowed $20K to replace roof and put in a new kitchen, bathroom and create a 3rd bedroom within the existing floorplan. Sold in 2006 for $56,000. Current value is $410,000. 2nd house: Purchased in 2001 for $84,000 and made no improvements apart from a new...

    Washer & Dryer

My mum worked in the days before it was really common and was therefore able to afford a top loading automatic washing machine, back in the early 1960s. All our clothing was and still is, hung on the line to dry in the sun. I do have a tumble dryer but it is seldom used, mainly when we have...

Consumer Reports survey: Hybrids are most reliable vehicles

My Kia Niro hybrid is just about to turn 1 and it's a very good looking and comfortable car with more bells and whistles than I have ever had in a car before. It replaced a 2004 Nissan XTrail so I am probably easily impressed. At the time I bought the XTrail I thought it was the most tech...

    Good Time To Move?

Red Corvette, have you thought about renting out your home for the next 12 months while you are paying rent to live elsewhere?

    Tablet for eBook reading?

I bought an 8" tablet, one of the cheapest I could find to see whether I would like reading e-books. I am very happy with it. It doesn't have a SIM but connects wirelessly to my home internet or I can hot spot to my phone when I want to download a new book. After the book or books are...

Help. How to handle this situation from my daughter?

Return gifts? Never heard of that. You have a birthday and people buy you gifts, not the other way around. Aren't return gifts the gift you buy for them on their birthday? Not a custom I am familiar with at least.
