Reluctant Rebalancing to Bonds in January

Your AA is an agreement with yourself that you would rebalance during times like this. Thinking it's better to stay in stocks right now sounds like market timing. Stick to your plan. Good luck!

    Emergency Fund Idea

Thank you Meadbh - that's correct. The inflation obviously takes a chunk out of the amounts, house prices are going a bit nuts in our largest city(20%+ YOY), and housing costs aren't reported in the CPI levels AFAIK so there's that. Pre GFC the rate of home price gain was something similar. Due...

    Emergency Fund Idea

Hi, Thank you for all your input. I think some of the things you have pointed out are very fair points - especially buying on the dips is where the money is made. I haven't really thought out every nitty gritty detail on this, but think it poses an interesting bit of food for thought. I'm based...

    Emergency Fund Idea

Samclem, This strategy would minimize your in-and-out of the market. The only time you would sell is when you have lost your job, or an emergency has cropped up, in an up market. This whole idea is that it manages where your contributions go as opposed to where your money is. You'd also only...

    Emergency Fund Idea

Hi guys, I was looking at emergency funds and had an interesting thought. I'm fairly young, so money invested now is pretty important, however I'm also self employed, so being financially stable is also pretty important. Previously I had a goal of a 12 month emergency fund, however I'm now...

    Gas $4 this summer

I just filled up my tank at the equiv. of $6.75 USD per gallon(feels so strange using Imperial). The base price of gas here is similar to the rest of the world, however the govt levies fuel taxes, emissions taxes, and a goods & service tax on it. I live in New Zealand, a country the size of...

Return the US dollar to a metal's standard

The problem I see with this is quite simple - it's toxic and highly radioactive. So what happens if someone wants to exchange dollars for the metal? Also, the great thing with gold is there *are* commercial uses for it, so there is strong demand. In theory, no matter what happens, gold will...

    Thoughts on these 2 processors??

The Q6600 is the way to go. If you disable two cores on the Q6600, it will still be as fast, if not faster(in some calculations), than the E2220. For the same price, you could get two cores and a bunch of cache extra. It's a pretty straightforward choice really.

    Thoughts on these 2 processors??

the E2xxx line is the slower generation of the new processors - hence why it still carries the branding "Pentium", whereas the Qxxxx and E4xxx onwards line is the faster generation of the new processors, hence why they carry the branding "Core 2". The reason why I suspect the E2xxx is the same...

    Thoughts on these 2 processors??

Simple: One has four cores, the other two. Overclocking can eliminate any clockspeed differences between them. Go for the Q6600, you'll have four CPUs behind you instead of two. More and more applications are learning to take advantage of this!

    Renting vs owning

Ah of course, the 8% figure isn't going to last. I'm fully expecting it to drop to a healthy 6-7% by this time next year. And there's a definite small property bubble which is slowly deflating, however our Reserve bank tends to try to move to stop bubbles forming as opposed to America's reserve...

    Renting vs owning

I've been looking at the financial aspects of this issue for a while now, and have noticed an interesting phenomenon. It actually costs the same to both rent or own in New Zealand. This requires New Zealand's current housing/financial climate. Most bank accounts yield in excess of 8% - Mine...

If you were buying a car today...

My good old, reliable 1989 Mazda Capella(A.K.A. 626) has done 180K. Time to be replaced? Nope, only when I can find something which gets 40MPG for about $800 and the capella is a rusted pile of steel. That being said, it's getting there, I just spent $200 replacing a frost plug which had rusted...

What to do if you do not want a funeral

While a funeral service is dedicated to someone specific, it's more for others to gain closure and move on. It's their choice, and I think you'll find that they will prefer to have a funeral to honor you. Let them have their rites.

    Foreign Bonds Anyone?

If anyone wants to lend me a million or two to stick into a New Zealand 10% 5 year CD just give me a yell. 'Investment fees' of only 0.5%, plus tax of 30% on the interest ;) Only risk is that the NZD might fluctuate and the chance that I may run off with the millions
