    Relocation visit

Hubby and I did something similar a number of years ago and we made sure to do some of our favorite activities when we visited our future home town. We went out hiking and went out with an organized bird watching trip. It gave is an opportunity to meet with locals who could be potential friends.

(Early) Retirement is not just about the money

It is so interesting that you describe it like a prisoner struggling to adjust to life outside because that is exactly what I was thinking too. I even wrote something along those lines initially but thought I was getting a bit wordy, if not overly dramatic!

(Early) Retirement is not just about the money

This is a very useful thread and cuts to the heart of what I am most afraid of and it isn't running out of money! I attempted to ER this past May and was back at a full time job by July. :nonono: I "retired" at 59 rather impulsively and then panicked when I felt rudderless. Now I have a firm...

Do You Have a Rainy Day Passion?

Calico...what do you do with the jewelry items that you make? I too "bead" but am struggling to justify it as I don't have an interest in selling. There is only so much jewelry that I can wear or give as gifts. Fortunately I have quite a stash of beads and supplies so I am at least not buying...

    Volunteerism and FIRE

I am still working but hubby does a fair amount of volunteer work. He knew long before he retired that he would volunteer in an area he is passionate about. He is very firm about not taking on Board leadership roles or administrative roles although he is frequently asked. He is my role model...

    Cataract Surgery...which type of lens?

My hubby is an ophthalmologist and he said that glare and decreased contrast are significant problems with the multifocal lens. He said some people never learn to tolerate them and end up having second surgeries to replace them. He did say a few people like them so maybe you will be one of...

Living on Texas coast? Any advice

Hubby and I had a second home in Rockport for a few years that was theoretically going to be our retirement home. We lived and worked in San Antonio and drove there almost every weekend. About a year before he actually retired we realized that we didn't want to live there full time. It is a...

    Retired Doctor 1 year anniversary

Congratulations! My hubby also worked in academic medicine (ophthalmologist) and retired 6 years ago at age 60. He planned to retire a year or two earlier but stayed longer to cover departmental responsibilities longer than he wanted. The good news is that he hasn't regretted retiring for one...

Big Gulps of "Free" Coffee: What do you think?

In my humble opinion, individually wrapped condiments and crackers and such are not provided so we can restock our pantries at home or on the road. I saw a young woman at Starbucks recently open up her purse at the cream and sugar bar and load up several handfuls of Splenda packets. No one...

    Leaving the rat race!

Congratulations...September will be here before you know it! Today was my last day at work and I can't believe I am finally free of my stressful management position. Next week I start working as just a worker bee at a non-profit two days a week to try to ease into semi retirement...

    Ch-ch-ch-changes

I will keep you in my thoughts. Please keep in mind that the body's healing abilities are not well understood. I am an RN and I promise you that I've seen people survive things they were not "supposed" to survive. Or live years longer than the doctors predicted. No one knows how your body...

    Blood Pressure Experiments

How is your weight? If you are even modestly overweight you might find that weight loss of even 10 lbs or so reduces your blood pressure.

    Interesting blog article

This article won't teach anything to the readers of this blog but it might be a useful resource to forward to newbies or skeptics as he does a fairly good job of simply explaining ER. I forgot I had subscribed to it and almost deleted without reading because of the name, "Raptitude". It sound...

    Impossible W*rk Policies

I learned a similar "lesson" when I booked a hotel room with a hotel we didn't have a government contract with. It was less expensive and it was going on my credit card so it wasn't a billing issue. I got royally chewed and I never made that mistake again. My boss actually said, "don't try to...

It happened , without warning. The "Sr. Discount"

I so HEAR you on this one! I too inherited good skin and I am very slender and fit so folks generally thought I was much younger than I am. All that changed about a year ago when I developed an allergy to hair dye and stopped coloring my dark brown hair. The change of hair color to salt and...
