Ted_Shepherd

23 happy years into early retirement at age 53. Able to retire early because of living below my means and having no dependents ever. For 35 years now, I have been a long term buy and hold investor, with most of my assets in indexed funds -- Vanguard Index 500 and Total Market, and, until the high fees drove me out, the Schwab 1000. Inherited part of the retirement stash (less than a half). I manage that retirement stash to maintain its purchasing power, that is, I restore to the account enough of the current income to repair inflation's damage. Then, after IRS gets its cut, I live on the rest. Recent liquidation of some family assets (nonproductive) have given me a lot of cash. Some I dumped into the market in March. Underwater a bit on that. The rest, I have kept in cash. I am using the cash to support my cost of living and to subsidize a young relative's retirement accounts and, more recently, to get a house for him. The man has such sterling personal qualities that I can help him like this without damaging his self-esteem and independence, and without encouraging bad habits.
