Backdoor Roth All At Once - Single Tax Year Pain

While your thought of converting in down markets makes sense, I'm having difficulty figuring out why you even want to convert? Apparently your IRA is less than 10% of your portfolio, so RMDs from that are not going to be a big driver on your already-high tax liability. If I was in your...

Software or Website to consolidate Net Worth Profile

Empower Personal Dashboard (nee Personal Capital) is OK for that . But it regularly has connection problems with various institutions. It lost connection to my credit union last August and can't reconnect for some reason - so the cash flow function is useless for me right now. Too bad because it...

How to deal with taxable holdings with large gains

There is a 0% LTCG bracket up to $89,250 for MFJ. Add on the $29,200 standard deduction and you have zero tax on $118,450 of LTCG, assuming no other income.

For folks commenting about the right sidebar width, try clicking on "Change width" at the top right under Quick Links. It got rid of some wasted space for me.

Struggling with asset allocation as young retiree

I like that book too. At one point Rick indicated that he was working on a revision but that hasn't come out yet. I think he said that back in 2019 or so - so perhaps a revision is no longer in the works.

Forum Update - We're back! Ask your questions here.

Yea, I was looking at this, then playing with the new forum. Tried to go back here to comment and it was gone. Anyway, I think it was Cathy63 that pointed out the fix. When first in "new posts" on the right of the top blue bar is filters. Go in there, unclick "unread threads" and click make this...

Forum Update - We're back! Ask your questions here.

This will take a little getting used to but it is now more of a modern forum. My observations: New Posts is equivalent the old Portal view. I changed my browser zoom from 150% to 125% - the old forum had quite small text. Dark Reader is also good for this forum format - it is very bright...

Vanguard small-business retirement plan is moving to Ascensus

My solo 401(k) is with Vanguard. My thoughts are: This is a tiny portion of Vanguard's assets with greater than average paperwork involved. They really don't care if you leave so huffing and puffing is meaningless. Fido does not have Roth in their solo 401(k) so they are not an option. Schwab...

    Net worth calculator

PA has no exemption amount. 4.5% of the first dollar going to descendents, and 11% or 15% to other heirs. But then again I guess you don't need to know your NW because it doesn't matter how big your estate is, except to do the math. Or MD where it is 16% of everything over $5M NW. We've had an...

    How dangerous are our streets

Around 2014 a decades-long decline in crime rates stopped and an upward trend began (or flat for some categories but no longer declining). I suspect the trend is what people are noticing.

What If Fed Rate Hikes Are Actually Sparking US Economic Boom?

All of the above, and there is no "giving" involved. As MichaelB said, the interest income comes from other investors/savers or the government (future taxpayers these days) so there is no net benefit to the overall economy. There in no gross domestic product produced by higher interest rates.

    Net worth calculator

That, and understanding your death tax exposure. A lot of states have estate and/or inheritance taxes at much lower levels than the (currently) high Federal levels. And that is sort of the bottom line. Your net worth is your liquidation value (before taxes for death tax purposes) - annuities...

State Income Tax: not always perfect

Interesting that this was just published by Tax Foundation about non-resident taxes. They rate VA as one the better states in that area. https://taxfoundation.org/data/all/state/nonresident-income-tax-filing-laws/ Anyway, not sure what you mean by "partial year of residence". Are you talking...
