    DQOTD: When Would You Pay?

I pay all four installments upon receiving my statement from the county assessor. Whatever small amount of interest I forgo is well worth not having to give property taxes another thought until the following year.

Poll: There is no place for retirement anymore?

If the current rate of inflation is enough to require you to return to work then you had insufficient funds to retire.

Sad incident at our hotel this afternoon

That happened to me a long time ago at a cheap motel in Idaho, can't even recall which town. I was a young single male at the time and it somehow didn't occur to me to call the police when a young child, sobbing uncontrollably wandered into the open door of my room. I picked her up and rocked...

    Poll:Deficit Commission Recommendations

While it doesn't have a snowballs chance of becoming law, I could live with the changes. I especially like the proposal to eliminate the deduction on mortgage interest.

    Help for a wet computer?

I've seen it advised (though I haven't tried it myself) to buy a bag of rice and seal the rice and wet electronic device in a plastic bag until dry. Rice is hygroscopic and will draw moisture out of places you can't see. See Google, "drying electronics with rice" for more info on the method than...

what stores do/did you work at parttime after ER?

That's good to hear. REI is opening another store on the other side of the valley in Summerlin this November. Though too far to drive for a part-time job, it should open up some positions in their nearby Henderson store. As a member of the coop, I got a postcard a couple of weeks ago regarding...

Dividend investing- do you get a 3% yield?

As others have mentioned, it should be fairly easy to come up with a portfolio of dividend paying stocks which collectively pay over 3% these days. My portfolio of 24 individual non-REIT stocks yields 3.61% as of todays market close. Adding my 6 REIT's bumps the yield up to 4.17%. My first...

I'm sure it will be delicious...and of great medicinal value should you wind up in that predicament!:)

Cracked open a nice box of wine

I stuck a box of Black Box cabernet (sans the box) in the bottom of my backpack on a recent trip. A little heavy to begin with, but the load got lighter every day! Nothing like walking a few miles to enhance the taste of a wine...it was easily a 90+ points wine when far enough back in the woods....

How Long Have You Been Retired, UnEmployed, Footloose Fancy Free and Not Working

July 1 marks 2 years for me. First 3 months were especially sweet while I burned accumulated leave. Not only was it cool to get paid every Friday without going to work, but I learned a higher-up was quite tweaked with me that I had accumulated so much vacation/personal time and with HR for...

    Cheap, decent desktop

For just basic computer needs (email, pix, word processing, etc) for a non-gamer, is there really any need to future-proof by going for a quad over a core2duo? At least at the moment, Dell has a quad available for $499 but also has several core2duo's at their refurbished site in the mid-$300...

    All in my head...

Yep, guilty! Dear girlfriend asks me what I'm thinking; I reply honestly, "Nothing." And then I'm in trouble! Heavy sigh....

    Anyone from Nevada?

The tax on my townhouse in Henderson NV (Clark County) was $1306.80 for the 2006-07 tax year based on an assessed Tax Value of $214,934. As others have mentioned, there are caps in place on future increases.
