    Semi-retired friend feels inadequate

Martin Seligman's older book, Authentic Happiness might be helpful to your friends. Although he discusses how to deliberately cultivate meaning a little more in Flourish, it's a generally less prescriptive book. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/17/science/17tierney.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

    Semi-retired friend feels inadequate

This is an excellent book that might help your friend and the approach I use for change (try things out IRL and don't introspect your way into life changes): http://www.amazon.com/Working-Identity-Unconventional-Strategies-Reinventing-ebook/dp/B004OEIQ7C/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top It's also a...

    Swing Trading Anyone?

Perry Kaufman has a chapter on Swing Trading in his book "Trading Systems and Methods". This is a textbook more than a "Make Millions using my secret methods!!" type of book. Trading Systems and Methods - Perry J. Kaufman - Google Books It's been very difficult for me to over-ride a value...

Reduced Stock holdings to 25% today from 50%

+1 - Although I listen to Seth Klarman's advice more nowadays since he's alive and all that. I went heavily into cash in June and July and have continued selling here and there in September. No buys. Seth Klarman Truman Show Market - Business Insider "But the zeitgeist is so damn pleasant...

Breadwinner or single millionaires: Tell me your story

Single - 2 kids. One is 26, and the other is 13. They're fabulous and couldn't be happier with how they've turned out / are turning out - not much thanks to me, just lots of love, lots of independence and allowing them to make their own decisions and their own mistakes (plus consequences)...

Those of you who trade, do you ever stop?

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond wingfooted. I'm only about 60% invested right now with the remainder in cash/bonds so don't think I'm too aggressive (more because I'm on an RV roadtrip this summer and don't always have internet access, not really market timing). Am more...

Another Marriage Bites The Dust Due To Financial Incompatibility plus

sheehs, hope I'm not being presumptuous, but it does sound to me like you may have been "dancing" a fairly common dance all these years: The Dance Between Codependents & Narcissists | World of Psychology Very glad that you're taking your life back. :flowers:

Did you get rich on a single stock?

Heheh, no. I had a friend that worked there though in 2001 I think? He bailed right away unfortunately - didn't LBYM, was worried about being laid off and couldn't afford to go 2 weeks without a paycheck. I heard the people that stayed got fantastic retention bonuses.

Did you get rich on a single stock?

I was extremely lucky to be working for an energy marketing company in 2008 that went into bankruptcy protection due to trading losses in our parent co. in the summer of '08. We were all let go in late summer and I sold out of everything (was entirely in O&G sector). Was the only person hired...

Those of you who trade, do you ever stop?

Can you expound on how you're doing this? I'm fairly lame in comparison at only 15% or so this YTD. Having said that, I am sitting on mostly cash right now in preparation to travel (offline) for the summer, so that sort of explains the anemic returns. I just find it truly fascinating on how...

Those of you who trade, do you ever stop?

There's a couple of guys that post on another trading forum (value investing) I go on that are consistently generating >50% or so a year not counting 2008. If you follow their historical posts and trades, you can see that their results are real. One of them turned his IRA over to be managed by...

Do you have SMART goals & are they shared with others?

Thanks for that, but you can't have her! Seriously, she's the one I can feel safe to tell when I've had a big win in the market or reached a milestone even though she doesn't really get the concept of FI/ER at all. So many other people in your life will say stupid stuff like "you're lucky" or...

Do you have SMART goals & are they shared with others?

LOL, I know what you mean! Must be even worse as a man in a relationship... Whatever you do - or they do - they're excited about - and then they are praising you all the time and it's like ??? "Why are you saying this? I do not require this affirmation thing that you are doing." And you make...

Do you have SMART goals & are they shared with others?

Also meant to say that I'm very fortunate that my friend is an ENFP and can see things that I can't when my INTJ-blinders are on in full gear - and I help talk her down sometimes. We make a great team. INTJ strengths and weaknesses | 16 Personality Types I think it's great that one of the...

Do you have SMART goals & are they shared with others?

I guess I'll stick my introverted hand up :greetings10: and admit that I do something like this with a friend via email, only we touch base every day and don't really refer to it as SMART goals, more our current projects. Basically we send each other a list in the morning of what we would like...

    What is your monthly budget?

I'm budgeting for $10k/quarter or $40k for the year. I prefer estimating by quarter since Q1 usually has some travel (ski weekends usually), Q2 is a historically low spend quarter, Q3 is higher summer/motorhome travel (and annual vehicle insurance payment) and eats up the savings from Q2, and...

    Anybody tired of the Olympics?

No not tired. Canada beat US in men's hockey. There was cheering in the food court. Somewhat understated in a Canadian way, but everyone giggled all day long - and we wore red. And our lady curlers - just wonderful.

2014 the year of the miner

Sold son out of Vale for son at a quick (1 mo) 10% gain. Sticking with the gold miners for both of us for the meantime with a stop-drop price of ~ 10%. I sold a bit of GDXJ and G at about where I thought they were fully valued. Will be happy to be pleasantly surprised. Since the miners are...

Advice on how to work for terrible boss ....

Absolutely agree with this! I realized some years ago that while I may tell myself to "suck it up buttercup" or tough things out, my body is smarter than my intellectualizing. I've had my hair fall out in patches, chronic sleep (early waking) problems, something that felt like lyme disease or...

    RV's---never again

I have a Winnie, but if I didn't (or maybe even having one), would consider doing a one way from Alaska down south in "repositioning season" in late summer/early fall through an outfit like CruiseAmerica. We did one of them the year before we bought ours and IIRC, it was about a $25/day rental...

EXPENSES: Anyone feel like they are out of control?

I feel like I live a pretty average lifestyle but recently found out my water/sewer bill is 20% lower than the average in the community I live in. Not sure what's up with that - maybe because there's only 3 of us (not counting fur-kids). Here's my expenses now including sales tax of 5% in the...

2014 the year of the miner

Sold some of the Goldcorp that I bought in December on Friday just short of a 25% gain. Had read the 13F filing that Seth Klarman (Baupost) dumped all of the gold miners he'd bought in Q2 in Q3 2013 and it spooked me into taking some profits. And I had to make room in my RRSP for US purchases...

    "Lifting Fog" Effect?

Back in the day when I used to be a manager for the corporate reporting group of a fairly large public company, it was almost a joke how I used to come home after a long weekend away camping with the answer to how we could cut our workload by quite major amounts on month/quarter/year-ends...
