    Weather.com Inconsistencies

Yeah that bugs me even more. It's more like a 7 day guess. We don't really have that kind of skill but several years ago, they decided to throw it out there. The NWS started it.:whistling:

    Weather.com Inconsistencies

No, anybody can do anything they like with the NWS data and forecasts. They even can take them wholesale and claim it as their own giving zero credit to the NWS. The media can do whatever they like with the data and forecasts as they report it. The only thing they agree to do is to put out...

    Daylight saving time

Yep, being retired means it doesn't matter. When I was working, it did. A lot at 4:30 in the morning. If DST was year around, we might as well use solar time and just have everything run an hour earlier.

    Propane tank for home?

I have a propane tank and it works well. I really like it for the cook top. It has gotten very expensive in the last few years. But then so has electric so I don't know whether it would be any better. I've had it for 18 years. My water heater died a few years ago and I replaced it with a...

    DIY Solar Energy Projects?

From what I have read, the 2 most cost effective and efficient solar energy captures are water heating and passive solar heating. The south windows in my very non-solar house still significantly heat the rooms in the dead of winter on sunny days with below zero temps. A house designed for it...

Have you got all your 1099's yet?

I got mine done 1/31 because I messed up the state estimated tax payments. They said if I filed by the end of Jan., I wouldn't owe the penalty. Hope that's true. I also sprung for the state tax program since this 1st year of retirement + Roth conversions is more complicated than usual. I...

    My first month of ER

My pets looked at me as if to say "What are you doing here?" for several weeks after I retired. They snoozed all day and if I disturbed them, they weren't happy about it. I wasn't supposed to be there during the day. At my normal come home time, they acted like they always did. They got over...

    TV subscription alternatives

Mine came with a tuner as a media PC. I replaced the analog tuner with a Hauppage digital. was supposed to be good. One would think. ergo my blaming the tuner. Did you look at the age of the returns on that search? Not to mention most of the items are analog - useless in our all digital...

    TV subscription alternatives

Ha ha ha. Let's see. Where I am about 20 miles outside of a huge metro area, my broadband options to be able to stream video are cell with a 5gb cap & not fast enuf to do it and a satellite dish - very expensive & not real great either. That's it in 2011. There are a lot of people in my...

    I Tried Listening Once

One of the things I stopped doing is reading Dilbert now that I'm retired and no longer living in the Dilbert documentary. It is very nice not to have to put up with all those sociopaths in the workplace.:yuk:

    New Retirement Mindscape study

I've got 9 months into my retirement and I agree with W2R. Retirement is nothing but wonderful. And no, I don't miss any of things associated with work. If a large porportion of those surved were forced into retirement, that would color the results. Those people are really among the unemployed.

what did you do today? (2008-2015) (closed)

Today, I figured out my estimated taxes. Really should have done it sooner... Other than that, it seems like all I do is play with & train the puppy and hunt down stink bugs. Cooler today so the stink bugs are less active - whew!

Poll-Are You Doing A Roth Conversion?

I thought that too, but not so. Now I have this big gain on the deferred accounts that will eventually have to be taxed. I will defer the tax on my conversions to 2011 & 2012 per the special deal this year when my tax rate should go down a step. I might also be moved by then with further...

Where does the patience come from?

Having never gotten into that sort of financial mess, the question doesn't resonate. I guess this is the pain of growing up & taking responsibility for one's actions. But dividing the problem into small steps is how to accomplish any big task, which you did in your post. Look at each...

Poll-Are You Doing A Roth Conversion?

Yep. It is really the only tax advantage thing that will save me money. I'll pay the tax over 2011 & 2012 when I slip into the next lower bracket. The bulk in my deferred acct will eventually bite me. Wish it was all in a Roth but that wasn't possible.

    Light fixture question

Cute scarf! I would think that nylon or fiberglass screening would work fine. Florescent lights don't heat up that much.

    Light fixture question

Florescent lights can be tricky to change. You could line the cover with screening to cut the light. That could cut it about 50%. Or get a LED puck light for task lighting & don't use the florescent.

    RV Expenses

Another thing that works very well is the kitty litter or sawdust in a bucket. There are made for ones that seal pretty well and use doody bags or you can go super cheap with double bags in a 5 gal bucket & toilet seat. After 2R4 uses, just tie up the bag good & dispose in any trash can. The...

    RV Expenses

I looked at that too. Used cargo Sprinters can be had for $10-20k if you look. Diesel engines last a lot longer than gas so 100k miles is maybe 1/5 of their life. In the end I'm happy I got the camper van. I don't understand the idea of stealth camping and a plan to set up a stove outside...

what did you do today? (2008-2015) (closed)

I drowned or smashed 100's of stink bugs. Then did 100's more. Oh how I hate those stink bugs! Then I finally rubbed down the wax on my van windows and put another coat on. Did I mention that I hate those stink bugs that are everywhere?>:(
