Who follows a "buckets strategy" in retirement?

Maybe I am using buckets and didn't realize it. In general I keep a year's worth of expenses in cash.

I may have made the mistake of updating my Linkedin status to 'Retired'

I retired at 46 in 2022, and I decided to keep my linkedin around in case I ever needed to un-retire. I didn't bother updating it. So, it still says I am working for my former employer. My withdrawal rate is around 3.50% and that is only on my taxable account assets. I also have a pension with...

Why bother diversified? Why not all in Index SP500?

I FIRE'd in 2022 at 46. Half of my money is in taxable and half in retirement accounts (primarily a pension). I am only living off of my taxable account right now. I'm almost 100% stocks in taxable (I have a little in cash), but I'm not invested in the S&P 500. I use a few dividend focused ETFs...

    renters for life a question

I am 47 and so far I have always rented. In hindsight I wish I had bought a house 20 years ago, but I don't think I lost out financially because I put all of my excess money into the stock market. This has helped me to get to around $2M in investments, which is an extreme amount of money for...

Are you changing your strategy between December and January?

My strategy has been pretty consistent since the 2008 crash. I went into 2008 with a typical "boglehead portfolio", i.e. Total US stock market, and a little in Total Foreign stocks and Total US bonds. I learned from 2008 that the boglehead strategy is not for me. After that I transitioned to a...

What is the dividend yield on your portfolio

Arguing with ERD50 is pointless. Just IMHO.

What is the dividend yield on your portfolio

I haven't sold any options in 2022. I was selling cash secured puts in 2020-2021 during the bull run. Not sure if I want to sell any puts until the Fed turns accommodative again. For covered calls I'd rather just have an etf like DIVO or JEPI do it for me.

What is the dividend yield on your portfolio

That's why I track my yield on cost and not my yield. YOC uses your principal as the denominator instead of the current market price.

What is the dividend yield on your portfolio

I only own stocks and cash. No bonds. My stocks yield on cost is 3.67%.

Article - 35% of Millionaires won't be able to retire

That's awesome. If you don't mind, were you able to primarily live off of a "fallen angels" type high yield bond fund, i.e. relatively high credit quality for "junk bonds", in a taxable account the whole time or did you have to switch up strategies with the interest rates going to near zero? It...

Article - 35% of Millionaires won't be able to retire

It is interesting that people like to live near and be in the water so much. Humans have a lot of unusual features adapted for semi-aquatic environments. I've always thought that the "aquatic ape theory" might be true. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquatic_ape_hypothesis

Same here. Anything I can throw into a crockpot, sandwiches, anything with ground beef, and soups are what I usually eat. Ditto on just drinking water.

Article - 35% of Millionaires won't be able to retire

That sounds like me, expect I don't own a house yet. I have never liked traveling. I would rather watch a good documentary on some location than actually go there. Ironically, I may be forced to travel for a few years in order to save money. Theoretically living in south east asia, south...

Anyone Tried Day Trading After Retirement?

Maybe 2020 to 2022 was an exceptional time for finding mispriced stocks, with the two large crashes and the giant rally in between them.

Anyone Tried Day Trading After Retirement?

I have had a lot of success trading among dividend paying stocks. The "trick" is I never bought anything that I wasn't fine holding "forever" just for the dividend income. I never bought anything I didn't consider to be a high-quality company. However, I did take a lot of concentration risk...

Article - 35% of Millionaires won't be able to retire

I think once I turn 55 I will take a hard look at the 55+ communities to buy a house or mobile home. I haven't looked at them that much but they seem to be priced very cheap compared to "normal" housing areas. I'm guessing that is due to the more limited set of buyers. I'm thinking that by the...

Article - 35% of Millionaires won't be able to retire

I was spending around $36k (excluding taxes) in 2020-2021 before inflation took off. Probably spending around $40k now. I made myself voluntarily unemployed at the end of June. I am tied up dealing with family obligations until probably 2024. Helping my parents sell their house and move to...

Anybody else playing the lottery with 3x leveraged ETFs?

The fact that there are tons of 3x leveraged ETFs available for almost all sectors and indexes is pretty amazing to me. These are generally thought of as trading tools, but I like to look at them as lottery tickets. When these ETFs get discussed a lot of people focus on the "decay"...

Anybody Rely Mostly on Dividend Funds? Questions

I haven't visited these message boards in a while, but took a look tonight. I see not much has changed.... OP, if you are still reading this, I would suggest taking advantage of the fact that these investments are in a 401k/IRA. I would look into an ETF that generates money not just from...

Would you Retire if you weren't sure you could afford to?

Dude, go ahead and retire now. Lots of senior living places will let you stay if you sign over your social security and assets to them even if that amount doesn't add up to the normal fee. One of my grandparents was in that situation. For my parents and grandparents once they got into their 80s...

    Income Portfolio

Here are my precise reasons for choosing the dividend withdrawal strategy: Dividends are determined by the companies themselves based on the data that the companies see (which is going to be far more detailed and accurate than what anyone else has at that time). Withdrawing 4% is based on...

    Income Portfolio

Yes, that is correct. In general dividend income goes up over time. For the VTI the data looks like this: Dividend Growth Rate 3Y (CAGR) = 6.10% Dividend Growth Rate 5Y (CAGR) =6.76% Dividend Growth Rate 10Y (CAGR) =8.99% You do not have to deviate from VTI if you wish to use the dividend...
