    IRMAA, Filing Separately, Younger Spouse

True, the 2024 Fed 24% bracket is broad and wide, up to $191,950 for singles, before the jump to 32%. By contrast, the 22% joint limit is $201,050. Your point is good though. It is also partly an algebra problem, barring any blindspots. Thanks!

    IRMAA, Filing Separately, Younger Spouse

This calendar year is the first year which will be used to calculate Medicare premiums, IRMAA (63 years old). My DW is two years younger than me. We both have IRA's which can be converted into Roths. The majority of our income comes from Roth conversions we have very little earned income...

    Are annual physicals a must?

Not to hijack this thread but . . . . It's no stretch to call this "fringe" testing. The science behind good or bad gut microbiome is still in its infancy. Ask the lab if they have a CLIA certificate (they won't because only labs which have been shown to yield helpful information are certified.)

    Are annual physicals a must?

Physician in his sixties here. Annual physicals are good to the extent that your provider can get to know you, urge you to follow health guidelines and order labs. The last two you can do yourself in most states through: Discountedlabs.com (while it sounds fishy, they get a discount from a...

    Brain training games

He's correct. In fact Lumosity has been fined for implying that playing it's games staves off dementia. https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/press-releases/2016/01/lumosity-pay-2-million-settle-ftc-deceptive-advertising-charges

Ridiculous CD rates - where now

I've had all of my corporate bonds called in over the last year, with only Treasuries and Muni's left. Instead of "fighting the Fed," I've ramped up my index option trading with the goal of producing a bond-like yield with good success. It's not extremely risky, but the learning curve is very steep.

Did I overpay for new brakes?

DIY As many have said here, changing pads and rotors is easy. Bleeding brake fluid is easier still. If you are really focused on the cost, you should consider learning how to do it yourself. Few people make $150/hour in their leisure.

    Cycling Heaven Quest

I live in the New York Fingerlakes area which has fantastic cycling from May to about September. Between the NYS Forests and lightly trafficked rural roads, the road cyclists (95% me) and touring enthusiast in me has plenty to ride. The cold, the cold! Thank you so far for your suggestions! I...

    Cycling Heaven Quest

My wife and I are very healthy and looking for a warm weather, friendly community which is situated in a cyclist's dream world. That is safe roads, cycling buddies and beautiful surrounds. If it is located in a 55+ neighborhood with with a ready-made group of friends, even better. I've plied...

Gold or Stocks: Which is the better inflation hedge?

I'm no gold bug, but as many of you know, the Harry Browne Permanent Portfolio has 25% gold and for a risk(volatility) return basis has been extremely hard to beat. A discussion about the permanent value of gold should include the long-term viability of any fiat currency ever created. Given...

Hi from an old hippie in Illinois

The only point I can comment upon is the "millions to retire upon." In general, if one does not have a pension or SSN, then the way to calculate the withdrawl rate, say over a 30 year time horizon is about3.7-4% inflation adjusted per year. Working backwards, your $140k annual income stream...

    USAFMD ejecting in 2012

I appreciate your kind thoughts. As a medical student, I spent some time in the VA system decades ago. I hope (for the patients's sake) there have been major substantial improvements since then. In the past, Kaiser Permanente was one of my employers, after the USAF. How should I put this . ...

    USAFMD ejecting in 2012

Thanks for the welcome. I am reminded of the quip that I'd like to make my money in a capitalist society and retire to a socialist one. Without getting into Obamacare details, most Americans agree upon several tenets of change, one of them is no-capping of benefits and the other is removal of...

CD's to be extinct by 2012?

I don't think you are far off the mark with CD rates pushed to ridiculously low levels!

    USAFMD ejecting in 2012

Thanks Harry, another retired MD also recommended taking 2 months off. It is a good thought which will let me test the water without jumping in. With the rise of the stock market recently, quite unexpectedly I have reached my number a year and half early. There is nothing I can do since my...

    USAFMD ejecting in 2012

As a lurker for quite a while, I decided to write up an intro at the time of registering. Although USAFMD is my handle, it has been two decades since leaving the service, having had a great time serving this great country. In about two years, I will be 51 years young, my two children either...
