    Firecalc question

Stupid question, most likely: when I run it, under portfolio, I put only money (investments, cash), not our condo, because it appears on portfolio changes. But should it appear under "portfolio" on page 1, since it is a part of net worth? Thanks.

    When is enough , enough?

I am 100% with Music Lover (ha, am a retired musician), who phrased it much better than i would have.

Do you Autopay your Monthly Bills?

Yes, absolutely. We have never had a problem. I trust them much more than for my husband being sure to catch every bill as it comes in the mail...

whee! taking a plunge with spending

Furnished, down to dishes and sheets, in Bologna. We will have to get a dryer. I do not understand how northern Italians do without. It makes me crazy to think, "I might run out of underwear, or shirts, or whatever, in 3 days, so I had better do laundry now, so it has time to dry." In Sicily, or...

    RSV vaccine side effects?

I had all three a week before traveling to Europe because it was the only way to do it. I was definitely sick (like mid-range flu) for about three days, and then it was over. I comforted myself with the fact (perhaps spurious?) that side effects prove a robust effect of the vaccines.

whee! taking a plunge with spending

I have been hunting for a thread about freeing up one's spending habits, but can't find it. We have a taken a big plunge and rented an apartment in an Italian city we love though we will be able to spend only half the year hear on tourist visas, and bought a modest grand piano for it ( I am/was...

I was about to ask precisely the same question, since I have no idea the meaning of this post. OTOH, a lot of finance surprises me...

    Knee-jerk and expense-tracking

Does anyone else have a knee-jerk "think again, you can't afford it" reaction to the thought of spending any money? I have to laugh at myself, because I do though we could afford anything, pretty much, we could need, or even want. It seems to have come from my sweet husband, who has never told...

    Are You Middle Class (Calculator)?

Used Firecalc as income As I am retired, I put what both Firecalc and I-Orp say we could spend. We don't spend it now, but if we wanted to, we could. It does think we are middle class, even living in Manhattan.

    What do you consider safe?

i-orp back! Good advice, Robert. And good news, too! I use one that is from some group the name of which I forget, and had been bemoaning the loss of the i-orp. Well, it's back! We've been drawing 2%. Will be less when my SS comes in 5 months.

Best time for SS withdraw is age 67 not 70?

Hmmm....I watched a number of youtube analyses and decided to start at 68 and 5 months, in July. Several reasons. Will be interested to see how if works out. We are not cutting it close, anyway.

    What do you consider safe?

Quite so, DrRoy. I use the eu calculator and another Schengen calculator that tells how many days you have left very clearly. Going for 2 months, back to US for 4, 2 months Italy, 4 months US is very safe, /schengen zone-wise.

    What do you consider safe?

update Good to hear! Based on Youbet's advice, I got further details from spouse, our "manager" of money, and it is 68% based on refining the details. We have been retired nine years.

    What do you consider safe?

We have been spending the last month in Italy and have another month. Loving it so much we want to do it twice a year. (We had been thinking a couple of years ago of just moving permanently, but think at the moment that it is not necessary and probably not a good idea.) This just sounds crazy...

    Little surprise on withdrawals

Not really saving it for anything ecept the fact that we have no children and hence will end up having to self-fund what ever befalls us in old-old age. We probably will spend a bit more this year. I think it may have to do more with the fact that we by and large already have everything we need...

Travel- How often, how long, how much $$?

We spent about 9000 for 5 weeks in Italy in July 2021 (that included language school intensive for us both). This winter I estimate $10,000 for 2 months in Italy again because the airline tickets were bought economy for points. We may do the same in the fall. So sounds reasonable to me. We are...

Delta Airlines reservation. Problem or not?

Wow, that stinks. For that money, you should have an easy experience. But we have a Delta/AirFrance to Italy in a few days and had the oddest experience ever. Economy class because I am a cheapskate and because I want to sit with spouse and by the window. AF referred me to Delta for seat...

    Little surprise on withdrawals

Happy New Year! I don't know that we are as frugal as many of this lovely group, but I always ask two questions before most spending: 1. Is it truly necessary? 2. Do I REALLY want it? My spouse, who does our financial management (with my input ) asked me a few days ago how much I thought we...

Big differences between FIRECALC and New Retirement

Ha! You nailed it. Everything i put in was the same, but the NR basic wouldn't let me say that we would sell our condo at about age 85 (looking at our parents, that was when it started not really working for them to live independently). I put in the sale of apartment as "windfall", and it...

Any Problems Having a Chase Checking Account?

We have had Chase in NYC for almost 10 years, mostly because they are the closest bank an dthey have branches all over the city. Any rare tiny problems (an iphone-deposited check not appearing, for example) were quickly, easily, and courteously solved, also the one big problem (someone got into...
