You hit an FI number, now what?

I don't remember when, but there was some point that I recognized that my portfolio was such that I no longer HAD to w*rk. That made my commuting, thereafter, a bit easier as I strove toward a more comfortable figure. ER was then only a matter of when, within a relatively short date span.

    Running with a new hip?

Sorry, I can't directly answer your question, but maybe this will help some, in the event you cannot resume running. I had heart stents 2 years ago, and I've been able to resume running. This has nothing to do with hip replacement, but I learned a few lessons: I don't run like I used to...

    Fentanyl Dangers

DW and I likewise never did any drugs, not even marijuana (college years were '69-73, so drugs were quite common). One of my kid's friends, who we knew, died a few years ago rom Fentanyl-laced cocaine. Very nice guy, had a good job, and ended up being a wasted life, dying at age 41. I just...

    Blow that Dough 2024

My backyard spigot had a drip, that would only stop if I used pliers to turn the knob more than hand tight. Replace it? Sure, a simple job. I took my pointer finger, called a plumber and voila it's been replaced with a new one. Happy to spend that $200!

    Credit Union financial advisor ?

DW is a retired teacher. Many years ago the 403b admin company had changed, and the new 403b advisor had asked if she would be interested in a free one on one session. He gave us one piece of good advice, even if it did mean moving the old money over to the new one. He kept in touch with us...

Activity might be the most important thing.

Adding to my previous comment, 2 somewhat contradictory points: Years ago I read an article about a long term study of runners and non-runners. By their own admission, the people doing the study said the sample was too small for scientific conclusions (maybe 100 people studied?). Anyway...

Activity might be the most important thing.

I'm very active, so I'm biased, but FWIW I agree. Just the other day I read a brief article about a study sponsored by NIH that mentioned how regular exercise apparently helps the entire body on a cellular level. That is, not just the particular muscles being targeted by a given exercise...

A Friend in need , how can I help

OP: Your wife is very smart and astute. As an aside, what she said is exactly what my DW would say if I were in your situation. IMO, I'd tell your friend something very short and to the point, because once you do NOT say "How much money do you need from me?" he won't be listening to you. I'd...

    "Affordability" and a new car

OP: A car is not an investment; you buy a car for a purpose. If you can afford it, then the answer is "spend whatever" in accord with what features you want, type of car, etc.

    Friggin leaking hose connection!

I am a legal gun owner, and before I shoot this hose splitter, I thought I'd ask for advice. See attached picture, where the leak is coming from the bottom of the blue tightening nut. It took me about 3 tries to get it right on the top part, but I'm getting nowhere with this leak. The junction...

Use It or Lose It Letter From Credit Card

EXACT same thing happened to me, with perfect timing. We were shopping for a new sofa anyway. I, too, made a small purchase to keep the card active, and when I got that $300 offer used the Sears Citi Card for a $500 deposit; it was nice to get a $300 discount. (I haven't used the card, since).

How much do you spend per month on fitness?

I pay annually, but my gym (I use it only for swimming) averages to $35/month. I average 1 1/2 running shoes per year, so that's roughly another 25/month. I often drive to a nearby park to run, and drive further to do group bike rides with some friends. Estimate $50 per month in gas to get to...

    Nice Hotel Miami Beach?

We were last there 40 years ago, but at least then the Sheraton Bal Harbor was great. I believe it still gets very good reviews.

shameless ask for praise for walking

PF is a not-uncommon ailment for runners. I've had it a couple of times. No quick fix for it. Depending on the person, it's some combination of orthotics/heel cushion inserts, icing of heel a few times a day, NSAID, and regular stretching a few times each day. Oh, yeah, it also...

    Spinal Stenosis

DW had it done for nerve compression from herniated disc. She had been literally bed bound as even sitting up put unbearable painful pressure on the nerve. Had that outpatient surgery, walked to the car with me. I don't remember the full-recovery time, but it was short.

    After I'm Gone

A valid point, but one cannot ignore the very important part of family finances. If one spouse is not aware, at the least, of where the money is, insurance coverages etc., then it's an important and loving act to have some quick read/ go-to source for that information.

Anyone else NOT watch the news?

It's all a matter of how extensive, and figurative use of language. As the OP, and as I alluded to in my opening, I don't literally avoid the news, and definitely know what's going on. With the full intent of adhering to this site's guidelines, I won't get specific. I have definite political...

Anyone else NOT watch the news?

OP here. I will check out this link. As I wrote in the thread starter - although in hindsight I mistitled this thread - I get a daily email with headlines and very brief description. I'll then use internet to look into any stories I want to get into more. I can cut through the chaff of...

Anyone else NOT watch the news?

I promise to not get political, and will be intentionally non-specific. I used to be somewhat of a news hound, being knowledgeable of most current affairs. Maybe it's my age, but for quite a while I would get internally worked up if I watch or read the news, in depth. So, for all intents and...

Anyone negotiate a "severance" in non-RIF times?

This is a great point to consider. A non-monetary thing to consider as well: when I voluntarily ER'd, it was a great feeling to leave on my own terms.

Anyone negotiate a "severance" in non-RIF times?

Too late now, but laying your cards out on the table with your boss took away a lot of your leverage. I've had the "pleasure" of being offered 2 severance packages; they were offered in exchange for me to not sue them. One was a generous package that I accepted. I did not accept the other...

    Fitness Activities In Early Retirement

The good thing about cardio and resistance exercises is the many variations available. Walking on the street, Stairmaster/treadmill/whatever, weights or bands, etc provide ample opportunity to find the exercise(s) one likes to do [or at least doesn't dislike] within whatever physical...

    After I'm Gone

Admittedly, I'm financially conservative. With that disclaimer, I think you are at a point where your finances remain too complex. Maybe we gave up a few points of total return, but a few years ago we simplified our finances to just a couple of funds (and T Bills) within Vanguard. All of our...
