What did you do today? - 2023/2024 version

We took a 35 mile bike ride around the countryside and stumbled on a memorial to troops in Colmar region. Super nice weather day for a long ride. E-bikes are definitely the way to go though you still have to pedal (pedal assist). Most paths are in the agricultural areas and very few cars seen...

In Your City - What Are The Most Desirable Neighborhoods and Why?

Not my ideal place, but not bad either. Dallas proper, north side of White Rock Lake (10 miles bike / walk path). Also Dallas Arboretum right there. Super easy to fly anywhere, but especially down to the Mayan Riviera. We got a direct flight to a few European destinations and tons of direct...

    Financially independent retirement optional

DW is going the same route. 4 day / wk schedule & spending more time & money on enjoying travel and the GKs. Do what makes you happiest. We could live on ~3%, but I told DW to start enjoying spending more, now that the FI part is taken care of.

A Friend in need , how can I help

We normally don't, but 15 years ago DW & I were asked for a loan from friends we knew for maybe 3 years at the time. We knew it may never be repaid, but to our surprise, it was paid, even after they divorced. 15 years later, just got a text today and we're going on vaca with them again this...

    Lost ID & TSA experience

Sorry for the late reply. Yeah, mostly data big brother already has. Phone number, address, etc. I actually gave them an old phone number as I was nervous. They just asked another question...

Restaurant adding fee for use of credit card

Kind of refreshing here in Europe. I like tipping with cash and not on the credit card. May make me carry cash back home when I get home...

Gout is no joke if bad. Indomethacin used to be my go to back when I had bad attacks, but rough on the stomach. Since I got Allopurinol, my attacks are next to never.

    About death and money

We recently updated our wills & TODD (cars & home in TX) & beneficiaries (primary and secondaries) and then made a shared document with banks, 401ks, pension & other accounts without the account numbers. DD will be able to get to everything eventually, but a decent amount of info to get it done...

How much do you spend per month on fitness?

I like the offset for doing the lawn. @$200/mo lawn, gutters and blowing off the roof savings, I'm in the green by ~$2000 annually. Just Planet Fitness for me @$10/mo. Walking the pup daily for a couple miles is free...

    Fidelity/Vanguard fees and minimum invstment

This is very likely the case. I changed from a community property account at Etrade to a joint acct. in the same brokerage (estate planning thing) & they even gave me a $600 "bonus". It was an automatic setting likely by putting in the code, but I'll take it. The bonus went up to $4k if you...

Restaurant adding fee for use of credit card

I'd rather not need to read my menu like a contract with the fine print showing me a fee. I go to places to relax and enjoy. And at the end of an enjoyable meal they poopoo on me with the convenience fee & leave a little ticked. This recently happened & I didn't say anything since we were with...

    What We're Making

Just built & installed these. Client wanted to match the other shelves and they were rift sawn white oak. Just happened to have enough scraps to make them. Client's painter will be staining & finishing. Just fine with me as we leave for Europe tomorrow... Scary thing that happened is the "wall"...

Restaurant adding fee for use of credit card

This has happened 2 times in the past month. An expensive restaurant (our first time) and AT&T basically said they will raise the price for internet by $5 if we don't change to direct bank pay. The restaurant was +4%...I'll start carrying cash for these in the gotcha moments as they will likely...

    Blow that Dough 2024

We will have a car for 80% of the time. Germany, France, Switzerland and then drop the car in Salzburg. Last 4-5 days, local transport. We've driven other countries but for some reason I feel this trip may be more complex. We'll see.

Vanguard small-business retirement plan is moving to Ascensus

This^^^ I may not have been clear, but the closure reporting is for any value. The 7 months was mentioned by the agent and the cleared funds after transfer/rollover had to be completed.

Vanguard small-business retirement plan is moving to Ascensus

So I called the IRS line for the 5500 form. Here's the skinny that applies to 1 participant plans (me). If the plan is under $250k, no filing of the 5500-EZ form for the annual reporting, BUT... If you are closing a plan, you have to do a "closure" form, the same 5500-EZ and indicate this is...
