Old TV (or Radio) Commercial Jingles

I was only allowed to watch one hour of TV on a school night, so I don't know how I absorbed these: "Riunite on ice, Riunite's so nice, Riunite, Riunite!" "Head for the mountains" (Busch beer) "Bain de Soleil for the St.Tropez tan" "Make it Progresso - or make it yourself"

Better To Book Hotels Directly or A Booking Site?

Just a note for longtime Hotels.com users that they are changing their "book 10, get 1 night free" rewards program. "Launching in mid-2023," the One Key loyalty program will give One Key Cash for bookings through Hotels.com, VRBO and Expedia. It will also affect what you haven't yet redeemed...

    Your favorite 2022 Purchase?

A beautiful plum-colored Eagle Creek 40 liter travel pack, which will contain all my necessities as DH and I travel around the world this year. We just returned from a 6-week practice run to Portugal and Spain, we'll spend mid-January to March in the central highlands of Mexico, and will be...

    ? give a key to a neighbor I don't know well

OP, your gut is telling you that right now, these are not the neighbors to trust with a key. Go with your gut, while also establishing a relationship with neighbors to see if your gut reaction changes over time (and also, to build community). Maybe they'll never feel right to you, but you could...

Cheapwad Finds--Opposite of Blow That Dough!

I enter contests at my public library and have won twice in the adult division. Insider tip: younger adults are too busy working and raising kids to take part in these contests, so the odds of winning are quite good. I took first place for adults in the Peep Show. (Ha ha - not what you were...

Things growing up have fallen by the wayside

They were still using this at my elementary school in 1979! And square dancing as well. But we also had "New Games" (relic of the late '60s-early '70s, where nobody lost?)

Nice Hotels as we get older?

We got a decent deal at the Old Santa Fe Inn this past Feb/Mar. It was close enough to the plaza to walk and included a hot breakfast (eggs, tortillas, green chile, pastries). Room was very small but comfortable.

    Any Japan Travel Tips?

Went to Japan 3x during 2015-2016: Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Nikko, Sapporo, Noboribetsu. I'm always looking for value, novelty and pop culture rather than luxury, so keep this in mind when it comes to my recommendations! - Tokyo ryokan in Asakusa, near Senso-Ji temple: Sukeroku no Yado...

Is this a great house or what?

Re: original house at https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/6905-Sconfinato-Dr-Hartford-WI-53027/40581560_zpid/? My eye was caught by the huge framed Gold Coast Bulletin tabloid in the living room: "Girl, 10, Saves Mum From Attack." Is she now one of the owners? She does have some badass shoes...

Where Do You Get Your Fiber?

Ah, Helen, you've gotten to the crux of my problem. I'm on the 3-year plan, too (after 1st colonoscopy) but haven't eaten meat since 1986, when I was 15. I have increased fiber a lot over the years, though, as I became a better cook. The Instant Pot is a godsend for cooking legumes.

    Complexity of Purchasing Prescription Medications

I thought I understood health insurance, having used it for 30+ years, but being retired on the ACA has been an eye-opener. Three months of my generic prescription is $75 at the pharmacy (using my HMO), $50 by mail-order from Cigna, and $20 from an online pharmacy with no insurance needed...

Electric Bill to go up by 47% next month

Whenever I hear Entergy mentioned, my mind automatically substitutes "Entropy." ;D As a renter in New Hampshire, I'm curious to see what will happen with prices in our complex. I'm in a mixed commercial/residential mill building with 13' ceilings, 7' windows and exposed brick walls...

What are people cutting back on?

I've defaulted to the non-organic version of fresh produce unless the difference in price/lb. is less than 30 cents. Also started walking to Aldi to buy produce - it's over 2.5 mi. for a round trip, and the vegetables are cheaper, so I figure it's extra-healthy for me. DH now cooks his own...

Anyone Else Soured on Dining Out?

Having lived in several major cities and currently in a very small one, I've been spoiled. DH and I like to go out for inexpensive ethnic food at mom & pop restaurants, but the spices are muted here to appeal to local palates. At "American food" restaurants/bars and grilles, much of the food...

    Question about ACA in-network coverage

Pluperfect, thanks for your explanation - I've been looking at the Florida Blue plans online. DH and I have been thinking about domiciling in TX or FL and being nomadic most of the year; the health insurance possibilities of FL have us leaning in that direction. Interestingly, there are no Blue...

    Billed for screening colonoscopy?

P.S. I earned back some of the deductible by participating in one of those colonoscopy studies that are advertised on Facebook. It was a legit company that is trying to develop a noninvasive test for precancerous polyps.

    Billed for screening colonoscopy?

Fermion, polyps were found/removed during my first colonoscopy, and I was charged for the pathology but nothing else in the procedure. (Believe me, it was enough!) I'm ALWAYS billed for pathologists and radiologists because they're not on the list of preferred doctors for my HMO. Healthcare here...

    New Coffeemaker

DH swears by the Zojirushi Zutto 5-cup drip machine, $73.95 on Amazon. His has been in service for 10 years. The only part that needs replacing (due to hard water) is a circular water filter above the basket, although I'm not sure when he last replaced it

    Free Dinner

Ha ha, Scrapr, that's an economical Valentine's Day! Hope your wife got a kick out of it. DH and I are apparently in the wrong demographic to receive these offers, but I do remember my mom sitting through a timeshare presentation in the late '80s so that she could score a portable b&w TV...

Gen Z and "Buy Now, Pay Later" services

Read this article on consumer loan companies like Klarna, Affinity, etc. which offer online point-of-sale loans, principally to consumers who are too young or too poor to have credit cards. This hadn't crossed my radar until I was buying masks online in the early days of the pandemic and noticed...

Best HMO or managed care system you've used

What's the best example (quality and seamless delivery) of managed healthcare that you've experienced in any place you've lived? Can be pre- or post-Medicare. DH and I are still trying to figure out where to live, and healthcare is one metric. Here, docs and specialists are affiliated with Mass...

What I don't miss about work.

Oh gee, Old Medic, I would take a miss on that, too! I don't miss: - customers with anger management or substance use issues - technology that was clearly broken, then being asked if I would "turn it on and off again" - Initiative of the Month (or year) that we would attend training for, be...

    California Water Restrictions

I remember seeing this slogan on a parade float back in the '70s (Bicentennial? 4th of July?) and 6 y.o. me thought it was the funniest thing ever. We really don't like to implement it at home, though. Luckily, we've had dual-flush in the condo we owned (CA) and the apartment we're renting (NH).

    Quadruple Bypass surgery recovery?

Hi Scuba, no particular medical wisdom here, just healing wishes for you and your DH! That was scary for both of you. My dad had a mild heart attack with a stent subsequently placed, and benefited psychologically as well as physically from cardiac rehab. Unfortunately, he hasn't picked it up...

    What was your greatest epiphany?

Despite all attempts at prevention, shitty health problems will crop up. All I can do is eat right and exercise so that I'm as strong as possible when they occur. And be grateful when everything's going well!
