    Really Early Retirement?

Just to clarify, the gay part wasn't sad. Not at all! Just that some people can't be happy for someone else's achievements.

    Really Early Retirement?

Oh goodness! That is sad that people have to think these things up.

    Really Early Retirement?

We are aiming for 6 years where I'll be 45 (H will be 43).

    Life before FIRE

Great idea for a post! We need to make sure life is enjoyable now as well! Husband and I don't have kids, so one might think we have a lot of free time (as our families members have thought out loud). However we find we are so strapped for time with all that we have chosen to do. Volunteer...

    CLASS OF 2027 to 2037

We are 38 and 36. We are putting away 50.2% of our own income into pre and post tax accounts. We each have a 457b, HSA, Roth IRA, and 403b. They are almost all being maxed right now. On top of that, we each have a 401a as well. Our employer (same employer) contributes 14+% of our salaries...

    CLASS OF 2027 to 2037

We redid some calculations and I think we're projecting an earlier year than before. We were thinking 10-13 years, but now we're projecting 5-7 years. We upped our contributions 46% compare to our last year contributions. I'll be 44 in 5 years.

    Any financial changes for 2015?

You should go educate the author of the article I quoted. I know nothing about this stuff! I don't even know how play a DVD in my house.

    Any financial changes for 2015?

Woah, Lurking! A baby is coming Friday and you are now a stay a home dad to be! Those are some big changes! rodi, well you're new enough to ER, so sure! Interesting to see a glimpse into the first year of retirement. I'm sure many have the "freak out period" too. Senator, I've been...

    Any financial changes for 2015?

Do you have any financial changes for 2015, Young ER Dreamers? We have updated a few of our contributions due to the new 2015 limits. We did some end of year analysis and figured we can start contributing to our 403b which were put aside for a while. The plan is $1000/mo for each of us on...

How to retire early — 35 years early

For someone who claims to be so happy living simply, I sense an attitude in his articles, like crankiness sometimes. Or "everyone else is pretty much an idiot but me and my kind." I've read a lot of the articles. Sure there are some things to take away from it too that will be useful to...

What do you do for a living?

We're 38/36 and aiming for ER in 10 years maybe. No kids, so that helps! We (H and I) are both in university research (science and technologies that deal with remote sensing). Together we take home less than $160k. Our employer gifts us almost 15% of each of our salaries into 401a...

Your avg yearly savings over the course of your career

I tried to use that metric but it was too complicated for my scenario. However, the combined power of two salaried individuals who are on the same financial page is wonderful.

Your avg yearly savings over the course of your career

I kind of had two lives. The first one I was married, made about $25k annually, had a spouse that never made over $10k. We could barely save $200/month and had zero savings at the end of the year. After a divorce, I lived on my small income and I also put myself through graduate school while...

    Milestone as well!

Just hit the three-quarter million mark in the retirement accounts! Only 16 months ago we were at half a million. That's a 50% increase in 16 months. Crazy! Just doing the same contributions we always have. However, just last month we got some COL raises so we are now adding to the 403bs...

    Millionaire celebration!!

Congratulations!!! Way to go! We will be hitting that mark in 2 years. Maybe we'll get a bottle of champagne, sit on our deck, and just enjoy the view!

how do you set short term goals?

Each $100,000 is pretty exciting I agree, but I guess we're focusing on the quarter million steps more so! The next one is 3/4 million set for a couple months from now. Every raise we get goes away before we see it. I constantly look at our spending habits in comparison to our income too.

What is the worst financial advice you have received?

Probably from my dad. 1. Never save more than 17.5% of your income or the government will take the rest (not sure where that came from) 2. Never give up your mortgage because you can always use the tax break

How our HSAs saved us over $10,000

That was one of my concerns as well. I take two daily Rx (one is now free thanks to the Women's Health Care Preventative Act!). So that leaves me with a heartburn PPI med. I've asked the pharmacists what it's going to run if I don't have my nice $5 for 90 days supply perk any more. They...

    Sugary Soft Drinks

I only have pop when I'm mixing it with whiskey, and that's even not that often. Same goes for little containers of Yoplait/Dannon/etc yogurts! Turn the grams into teaspoons. The "whip" version is the same container, but 4 oz rather than 6 oz (they put air into to make it whipped), so just as...

    Low Cost RV Travel

Too funny! - My H and I were looking at the same view of the San Rafael Swell from I-70 that RV Sue posted in her blog - on the same exact day (Monday). We did a long weekend of mountain biking and trail running down in Moab. This extended RV dream is also one of ours (not for another 8-10...

    Wills and no kids

Yeah I don't know who to pick ast the executor either. I have two sisters and a mom, none of them even came to my wedding (either time, married 2x a decade apart!), so that kinds of tells you how close we are. Yet I still fly to visit them 2x a year. I'm thinking of it two ways...

Poll: What was your employment track record?

I have been employed for 21 years straight so far (37 years old). I was maybe out of work for a less than week in between moving (like from home to college), but jobs were found quickly. I've held this salaried job for 15 years - knock on wood. I am very grateful.
