Thanks for the info, moving forward

Folks, Posted here a couple months ago while downrange; figured I'd give an update. Discussion with my better half upon redeployment found us on the same page in terms of believing that semi-retirement (and not working for the sake of working or getting more "stuff") is a worthwhile goal...

Post 9/11 GI Bill Transfer of Benefits Question

First, thanks to those who responded to my post last week and advised me to transfer the post-9/11 GI Bill to my sons. It worked out great and I got approved and my ADSO is going to be served concurrent with my current ADSO. Second, the question I have is: I realize you have to go to the VA's...

    Dumb "spending models" tab question

yes, multiple times. FWIW, i have my retirement date set @ 2038 (i.e. 27 yrs from now), and on the year-by-year portfolio balance graph, all the portfolio lines plummet down into negative territory. i am also inputting in my projected pension of $40,356/yr which starts in 2038, and the graph is...

    Dumb "spending models" tab question

One more firecalc question: Under "Spending Models", if I choose the "Constant Spending Power" button, my results are great: in 60 years I have an average of $4 million and 100% success rate But, if I choose the "Percentage of Remaining Portfolio" button, in 60 years I have an average of -$42...

Young military doc looking at options

@ av8er: wow. thanks for that piece of info. I was under the impression that the ADSO was served consecutively, not concurrently. That just make a year's worth of college possible for each of my boys! 2 follow-on questions: 1. I know that the service member can use the GI Bill for education...

Young military doc looking at options

Wow, thanks for all of the information and viewpoints. Much appreciated. I did ROTC + HPSP so in 2016 (when my ADSO is done and when I'm 38), I'll have 12 AD and 3 RC "quality" years. Sorry if that was a little confusing in my original post. JPatrick, I'm a PM&R doc and you hit the nail on...

    Pension figure to use?

quick question on firecalc: - under "other income/spending", in the pensions section: do you use the value of your pension in today's dollars (like you do above w/ Soc. Sec.) and do you multiply the dollar value x 12, again, like you do for Soc. Sec. above? thanks!

Young military doc looking at options

Greetings all from Afghanistan. First, thanks for the wealth of information out there on this forum. A bit about me: 33, married w/ 3 young boys, on active duty in the Army until 2016, looking at Reserves vs staying AD for the full 20 yrs. $105K in assets (currently split into: 20% money...
