    Scared to pull the plug

Molar, I can second the recommendation for both of the books Midpack suggested. Perhaps one more, Portfolio Life, by David Corbett. I am still not far away from your situation. You seem in great shape to make the jump. Good luck!

Did You Have Health Insurance Prior to Signing Up With an Exchange?

The ACA subsidy is a government entitlement payment paid direct to the insurance company on the persons behalf. Websters defines Entitlement as: a type of financial help provided by the government for members of a particular group. That money was never the rightful property of the entitlement...

Did You Have Health Insurance Prior to Signing Up With an Exchange?

Of course the large elephant in the room (the government) did not normally force people in private companies to pay for others if they don't want or need coverage. Big difference. I'm with Oldtrig, even though I will extend an old policy as long as able I am not for everyone trying to grab a...

    ACA sign Up

Oldtrig, Thanks for the very candid and thoughtful comments about your situation. As a baby boomer at the tail end of that generation I can see the problem on the near horizon you mention. Many feel as you do. The best plan is one we make ourselves, not relying on others to pay. Can you...

    Insurance Costs

If you are eligible for USAA I recommend giving them a look. Have been with them for 25+ years and have never found a better company. I check rates every couple of years and they are never beat.

Is catastrophic coverage a good alternative to a more costly bronze policy?

+1 Of course this is true. The truth should be told, otherwise is is deception plain and simple. These constant changes in this law, I think 12 at last count, are likely to be found unconstitutional. I think they are unprecedented. Not only that but it is chaos for the insurance companies...

Is catastrophic coverage a good alternative to a more costly bronze policy?

Here is a good analysis by Time. Obamacare: Mandate Delay Is The Biggest Change Yet | TIME.com Looks like a 'hardship' can be just about anything if you have been cancelled.

How long can you leave home and leave it empty?

Services like this one: http://www.sbimailservice.com/mail_services.htm Seems to be more like $20 a month. Things are scanned for your review or disposed of how you direct. Other than first class mail, it doesn't seem to bother me if the rest is tossed. If you are staying in the States...

    The New Rich

The best way increase available revenue is just to reduce the excessive spending of the Federal Government. It is a sad commentary on the great country that America is that dependence on government is encouraged, especially recently. There is no real reason for this explosion of dependence...

    The New Rich

Midpack, no snark intended. Just a strong believer that government should not try to 'equalize' as inefficiency and less liberty will surely result.

    The New Rich

Sorry, but if 90 percent of the wealth was with one family we would be living in an aristocracy, which we are not. No sense in such an example. We have never had "unbridled capitalism" as you call it. There have always been laws and market forces. The market forces are far more efficient...

    The New Rich

Of course in both cases the person EARNED the $1M. Never actually belonged to the government, or those that didn't work for it right? Few people actually paid taxes at 90 percent in 1963. The standard of living and mortality for all Americans is vastly better now than in 1963. Our various...

    The New Rich

I believe this data is just meaningless. Not useful to compare a country of 315 million people to Canada that has only 34 million. Far more budding businessmen and others are still trying to immigrate to the U.S. from around the world than to Canada, or any other first world country. Go to a...

    The New Rich

Yes, it lowers someones self-esteem if they must work and plan for themselves. It would be interesting to see a comparison to being 'Rich' and being 'Poor' in the rest of the world as compared to the United States. Or, for that matter to the U.S. 100 years ago? I have seen such studies but...

ACA- true story for a younger person.

True, best to see how things play out. Anecdotes aside, the fact is that most young folks just have no incentive to sign up as they are smart enough to know they will merely be subsidizing the older or sick folks. The numbers certainly bear that out thus far. This is not gloom and doom, just...

ACA- true story for a younger person.

Yes, interesting generic story from the OP, but is seems what is actually happening is that the vast majority of the young are just not interested... Few uninsured young people say they’ll sign up for Obamacare

I have never heard of a true chip & pin where you can set your own pin. Usually it is assigned when the card and chip are stamped and cannot be set in advance or changed later .

Who waited too long to FIRE?

After reading many entries from those trying to hang on in an unfulfilling job to hit a higher number, I wonder who would have FIRE'd _earlier_ or differently knowing what they know now? Time is more important than trying to hang in there to hit $5m, or $3m etc. Could be valuable for those...

Easy way to get 50,000 delta frequent flier miles

Not really necessary to do that. United and American both have credit cards you can open and get 50K miles for only a 3K charge. I did it for both and put the cards in a drawer later.

Why are we so paranoid about having choices?

+1 They should be able to _keep_ their policies, not just be listened to which is telling them someone else knows better -typically false. Having 50 million lose policies is not what was promised, but perhaps was what was intended. Washington Post today...

Americans Retiring Early, Then Running Out of Money.

I was with you until the media reference. That sounded more like it came out of the few folks that listen to MSNBC. I had a similar employee. Complained about the unfairness of the 'system' and how low his SS would be, thought the government should do more for him and complained about high...
