    401 K rollover strategy

Yes, and part of my consideration is that to accomplish Net Unrealized Asset gains, I would take the stock out of the 401k, pay taxes on the cost basis, hold the stock for one year, then sell it - thus paying taxes on the gains. Which appears to be beneficial even if I don't like coming up with...

    401 K rollover strategy

Activate your spreadsheets everybody! I retired over a year ago but received a severance on top of immediate activation of my pension. Last year it threw me into a 28% tax bracket (single). With a pension, I am not likely to ever see a 15% bracket and that is without SS). I am 59. Now...

If you had a lot of stuff, how long did it take you to do a major de-clutter?

Today, with the assistance of a helper in college, we decluttered the garage. It took six manhours, but the garage is clean! We filled about three construction clean up bags for trash and sent a load to Goodwill. I gave her a couple of goodies (unopened box of pyrex dishes, bike rack, etc)...

    Surprising Budget Ideas

Now that I have more time to study receipts, I am finding mistakes from the grocery store check out. Either the cashier doesn't use the pull off coupon, or the price charged was not what was advertised. I try to watch during the check out, but have no hesitation to take the coupon and receipt...

52 Yr old, $3.1 million, all over the place!

AmIReady: I am aboout 3 months into retirement and can relate to your situation. I have found that it has taken me a couple of months to decompress and that some of the income needs I anticipated are not going to materialize. I also had a lot of paperwork to complete, pay for unused vacation...

    Two months in...life is GOOD

Before I head off to the gym I just had to note how much I enjoy this forum. I decided against home machines because I needed the socialization of the gym, plus the ad hoc observations of the trainers, etc. It helps to live close to one! While I am not in the habit of making comparisons, I...

    Two months in...life is GOOD

Exactly! I saw a former coworker after church last week and told her that while I initially thought I would go back to work, I have changed my mind! I am having too much fun!

    Two months in...life is GOOD

Many thanks for the advice, experience, and wisdom of this community. I am roughly two months in to retirement and cannot get over the euphoria! And I still feel as though I am decompressing!!! Among my observations: * So far the fears that seemed so prevalent before I left have no sign...

Hi - taking the 'package' and on the glide path

Ha Ha! I am so excited about leaving that I cannot spell PREPARING correctly, calling is PREPARTING......heck...I might be on to something.

Hi - taking the 'package' and on the glide path

Cleaning off my desk! Again, thank you to everyone for terrific wisdom. I just left a conference call explaining all the benefits and severance package. Am cleaning off my desk, cleaning off my hard drive, deleting emails, and preparting to walk away for good tomorow. Let the journey...

Hi - taking the 'package' and on the glide path

Although ex spouse made more money, he did so via an S corp. and paid low wages with high distribution. We didn't make it to the 7 year mark so I don't think he could claim much from me. Besides, I would rather let a sleeping dog lie.

Hi - taking the 'package' and on the glide path

Thank you for the collective wisdom here. My mortgage has less than 5 years left, so there is little tax advantage left, and quite franky, with it gone, I will be debt free. Something to be said for that. With more time on my hands, I will devote some of it to managing the tax...

Hi - taking the 'package' and on the glide path

Sadly, I cannot defer my pension. I could do income leveling as tho I were getting SS, but then it would drop at age 62, so I am not going to select that option. Longevity is a mixed bag for me - mother died at 57 and father died last year at 83.

Hi - taking the 'package' and on the glide path

That is the problem - I don't have any heirs other than two God-daughters. But I don't want to end up in a subsidized nursing home, either. I have played with Firecalc and the crowd sourced version out there and agree that I am in a good position. Believe it or not,, I looked into LTC and...

Hi - taking the 'package' and on the glide path

Thank you for the advice. I will look into the conversion for sure. I have to be strategic with this as my severance and retirement will both occur over the next year. To be honest I did not fully manage the 'tax' implications of my income while working but am now free to do the extra study...

Hi - taking the 'package' and on the glide path

2/3rd of pension is tied to COL index. My one consideration for taking SS early is that I am such a skeptic conservative and like many others have my doubts whether it will be around .......

Hi - taking the 'package' and on the glide path

I am so grateful for the reassurance and insight offered by this forum - which I have been viewing for over a year. I am 57 and taking a package at the end of the year which will give me a year of severance. I start receiving retirement ($47,000) next year which includes healthcare (around...
