Poll:Those who follow a LCHF (Low Carb High Fiber) Diet, What do you eat?

I missed the “Fiber” part of your LCHF. I’ve only seen it to mean Fat. That’s what you need to increase IMO to help with volume/boredom issue. Fat is what makes it work. I try for less than 20 grams of net carbs, moderate protein and the rest of my daily needs are fat. Totally different than...

    HSA Advice?

What medical expenses are you thinking are not going to be covered by Medicare and Tricare for life? My DW had joints replaced, prior to Medicare and one after and it was all covered, including prescriptions except for small copays (like $20 for office visits).

Matching Knockdown texture on a ceiling

I've used the spray stuff (they make one specific for knock down) and got good results after a couple of practice trys, the key is the paint IMO. Matching the paint to ceilings that were last painted a couple of years ago is a challenge as the new paint never looks the same.

Heat Pump Recommendations, Trane and Other

Last time I looked there are about 5 manufacturers of the 24 or so HVAC system brands. Trane and American Standard both have the same parent company (Ingersoil Rand). Another similarity most of these brands have in common, many of the components are made by the same 3d party manufacturers...

It's Not A Smooth Transition! Bad Dreamer!

Welcome! I've been fully retired for a couple of years and I still have dreams about work, good and bad. Thirty-plus years of being your profession takes some undoing. Lots of good stuff here that helped me "get a real life".

    Social Security Marriage Hump Penalty

I think this is the same discussion available over at the bogleheads site with a spreadsheet to show how the taxation of your SS will impact you using your own numbers. Here is the link. https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Social_Security_tax_impact_calculator

    Hello from sunny San Diego

Retired Military here. + 1 on Bogleheads.org, passive investing and Nords. If you educate yourself and follow the recommendations already posted (minus the dividend-paying blue chips) you are well on your way. Oh and retiring at 50 is early retirement for most and if some day you get married...

    Your recent repair? 2013 - 2020

Lots of stuff I would try if you can't test the compression, I had similar problems and it was the ignition coil. Plenty of on line troubleshooting guides. Best of luck.

    Your recent repair? 2013 - 2020

Have a Toyota 4R with a really ugly torn seat bottom on the drivers side near the door, seems to be a common issue on older Toyota's and has bugged me for a while. After some research I discovered that I could swap out the driver and passengers seat bottoms. On the passenger side it hides the...

2 months into ER and "My employer gave me my 60 day notice"

I was able to receive UI, severance and start a pension all at the same time, each state is different. Doesn't sound like you really want to retire. It can take years (1 or 2 perhaps) to come down and find yourself after 30+ years of being a full time employee, it takes some undoing and...

    Your recent repair? 2013 - 2020

Truck key started being difficult to turn in the ignition, at first I though it was just a worn out key (2001 Toyota Tundra) so I had a new one made. Couple of days later SIL couldn't get the key out. After some research found I would need a new ignition switch to the tune of several hundred...

Panama Expat Blog with Cost of Living

Here is a great blog if your interested in Panama. The latest post includes a cost of living analysis. I lived in Panama for many years and found the people to be amazing. The expat life is not for me but if I were to consider it, Panama would be towards the top of my list...

FIL in a really tough spot-looking for suggestions

+2 Sorry that you and your FIL are in this situation. Unfortunately many of us have faced something similar or will at some point. The positive here is that you're trying to determine the best course of action now and not when he is facing a much more serious issue (which will come). Someone...

    Cross Roads: Family 1st

Have you thought about another job that will provide more time and be less in conflict with your role as a caregiver? You will need help IMO no matter what, I only cared for my mother and I needed lots of assistance. It can be overwhelming but I think your heart is in the right place and you can...

Refrigerator started making loud noise that got progressively worse. Turned out to be a bad condenser fan. Found the part and a video on the internet, took about an hour once I got the part. Also cleaned off the coils underneath with a vacuum after propping it up, now DW wonders why things are...

How to clean refrigerator coils on the bottom of the fridge??

Here is what works for me and what my local repair lady did. She had a soft sided tool bag and after she tipped the refrigerator back she placed the front edge of the refrigerator on the bag and went to work with her small portable vacuum. Now I do the same a couple of times a year (it's a dog...

    Smart TV

I'll provide a quote from an article and give you the link. This mirrors my experience and sounds like yours. "In practice, smart TVs just aren’t that great. Smart TVs have software made by TV manufacturers like Samsung, Sony, LG. Their software is generally not very good. Smart TVs usually...

Change is hard! Moving after 27 years?

As long as you both are in strong agreement it can work. Our experience was slightly different as we have grand-kids in the area we moved to. We don't miss the traffic or the crowds. We do miss the ready access to bike paths and some of the benefits that a big city offers. The one thing we did...

    Marines

I commend your son on wanting to serve his country, it will be a huge commitment. Have him talk to as many veterans and non-recruiter Marines that he can prior to his enlistment. The mission of the military is at it's most basic to kill those your directed to kill, preferable without getting...

    PCS to Fort Leavenworth KS

Been there done that. Leavenworth is really a suburb of Kansas City, about 30 minutes away so there is plenty to do and see. Lansing is a nice community south of Leavenworth that many of us chose for the schools, the shorter commute to KC and it's only 15 minutes to the gate. The Plaza in KC is...

Mom's arthritis pain and noncompliance - any suggestions?

Please don't take this as anything other than a well meant suggestion, but having been there done that, I would ask her GP or another healthcare provider to conduct a mental assessment. I believe it is a simple exercise to determine if there is cause for concern on that score. As a son I was the...

    Unfair Parent Rant

If your father has no experience around the military that could be part of it. My in-laws never understood. They were good people but just had no frame of reference except TV. I also found that being the sibling that lived far away made it difficult to have a balanced relationship compared to my...

Rent or own while active duty

Renting or government quarters was always the desire. When the wife and 3 kids came along we ended up buying 5 homes over 20 plus years. The number one criteria was always the ability to resale the house when needed. Lots of good real estate help and a significant other that made it a priority...
