What is your pet peeve of the day? -- 2021

My pet peeve is that it took me an hour to cancel our Dish TV service for our vacation property. Called Frontier Communications which is the company that has been billing us for the services for the last 15 years. They had me call back to a different number and then they put me on hold until a...

What have you read recently? 2009 -2020

I just finished reading Radical Sabbatical by Glen Tibaldeo and Laura Berger. Currently reading Escape from the Ordinary by Julie Bradley. Both books are helping me get in the mood for retirement in a month.

    Class of 2021

I will be retiring at the end of January on my 58th birthday. I joined this class way back in 2014. Plan to take the motorhome to Florida for February and March, then embark on a multi-month Fantasy RV Tour this summer to Alaska. Hoping this pandemic gets conquered because we have so many...

    What is your retirement Goal/Dream?

My dream is to retire when I turn 58 and reach full retirement age at work, and then immediately jump in our motor home and head south where it is warm in the winter. I envision being in the motor home for about 25 weeks a year touring the country and chasing 70 degree weather. I also plan to...

10 Things That Will Soon Disappear Forever (And 7 That Refuse to Die)

Newspapers............I read a daily newspaper for most of my adult life. Does anyone know of anyone under 35 years old that still reads a newspaper on a daily basis? I find that I read most of my news now online.

    Changing "Classes"

You have asked the question that I have been asking myself before I started this thread. I have found that I have kept increasing my own personal minimum required net worth threshold to no longer be deemed to be part of the "middle class" or "working class". It is now ten times the number that...

    Changing "Classes"

Changing "Classes" I have always viewed myself as being part of the "working-class". It is probably because of my upbringing. Maybe that is why I have been able to save a relatively high percentage of my income over the last 30 years. I have been very fortunate and blessed. I...

What history tells us about the future.

The following article made a lot of sense to me when I read it exactly five years ago before today. I decided to stay 100% invested in equities after I read the article. Seeds of a New Boom for Stocks? -- The Motley Fool The stock market has generated about a 100% return over the last five...

    2016 YTD investment performance thread

I was up 16.2% overall across all accounts. Up 9.5% for the $ invested in mutual funds via my 401(k) plan. The $ invested in individual stocks via my taxable accounts generated a return of 19.95%. 2016 was a much better year than 2015. However, it sure didn't start out that way.

Does anyone do short RV trips?

We own a 34 foot diesel pusher motor home. We have gone on a two month sabbatical rv trip all over the country as well as one week trips to Key West, New Orleans and Maine. We have also enjoyed going on weekend trips to music festivals, jeep festivals, college football games, punkin chunkin...

    Facebook stock

I agree. I'm at +469% since I bought the stock in 2012. I keep wondering how long the good times can last in such an unpredictable industry. I will probably soon donate some of my shares to charity to at least "recoup" my original investment. I wish I would have bought more shares.

    2015 YTD investment performance thread

Down1% across all accounts. This negative return wasn't as bad as 2008 when my taxable accounts were down 65%. Hopefully 2016 is like 2009 from an investment return perspective. Sent from my iPhone using Early Retirement Forum

    2015 YTD investment performance thread

Up 2.4% including dividends. I'm glad that I didn't pay any investment advisory fees. I would have been pretty upset to have used half of my earnings to pay fees.

    Class of 2021

Our class has been super quiet in 2015. Have any of you thought about changing classes in light of the market treading water this year? I'm still happily in this class despite the investment returns this year?

    Facebook stock

I share your sentiment and opinion. Fortunately I luckily got in at $22 per share on almost a lark but the ride has been enjoyable so far. I wish I would have made a bigger investment in hindsight. I remember the price falling and falling right after the IPO. Sent from my iPad using Early...

    2014 Investment Returns

9.5% overall return in 2014 on my taxable accounts and 401(k) account. The 2014 return is less than 1/3 of the return I got in 2013. I got killed in 2014 on some energy sector investments in my taxable accounts plus I now have 45% of my 401k balance in the Fidelity Freedom 2025 Fund to start...

    Class of 2021

I'll join the class of 2021 too. I'll become fully vested in a deferred comp plan when I turn 58 in January of that year plus our youngest child will have just turned 21. In the meantime, I plan to work but still take the opportunity to do a lot of traveling. I could probably retire right now...
