    Balanced Portfolio market frustration continues..

+1 I haven't made any major moves for about 20 years now holding a total market and total bond portfolio. I expect to keep that posture for the next 20 years or more. I do re-balance periodically when things get out of whack. Ultra low cost and very boring....just the way I like it.

    Decades chart, roaring 20's ?

No change for me either....total stock + total bond....rebalancing periodically, incredibly simple but it works better than most.

    Decades chart, roaring 20's ?

It would be interesting to see the same chart using 20 year period. Best take away for me is to be prepared for 10+ years of negative real returns.

Again Low Fee Index Funds Beat Active Managed

No surprises....the evidence has been there all along....it's a zero sum game. In aggregate active funds must underperfom the market by the fees and expenses they incur. It's just simple math. I really don't understand why many refuse to accept this.

    I Bond rate 5/2021

I started acquiring IBonds recently....sure it's small potatoes for some of us....$20k per year per couple. I also treat these funds as cash since once the holding period expires you can liquidate as needed without risk of loss of purchasing power. I wonder why when some dismiss these as...

    Whoa! Daughter asked investing book...

Great choice....that's what I was going to suggest. "The millionaire Next Door" Is a must read also IMO. Not finance, but a great book on learning to save and LBYM. As Bernstein says "Even if you can invest like Warren Buffet if you can't save you'll die poor."

How are my Rate of Return in my Roth IRA?

A better way to put it is....In aggregate, actively managed funds lose to the market indexes by their fee's and expenses. Exactly what you would expect. One of the earlier papers on this topic was written by Mike Jensen titled "The performance of Mutual Funds in the period 1945-1964" You can...

Will the "Other Shoe" EVER Drop?

Many of us believe that the stock market is brutally efficient. Maybe there are some securities out there that are mis-priced by some amount, but I don't try to find them. Don't look for the needle just buy the hay stack and hold on for Warren Buffets favorite holding period.....for ever. The...

    2021 Investment Performance Thread

Up 4.8% YTD with 60/30/10 portfolio. Minor small cap tilt has helped. Almost all total market and total international otherwise. I have a few odds and ends vanguard ETF's , VO, VPU, VAW, VNQ, VDC purchased back in 2006 that amount to a couple hundred K....not a significant portion of the...

Enough - How much is that?

Enough for me was when I reached the point, with a reasonable cushion, where I felt my funds would be more than sufficient to carry DW and myself to the end. As far as lifestyle, we have the means to ratchet things up a bit but it's not easy when you have been super frugal all along. Working...

    I Bonds vs TIPS

The only downside I see with Ibonds, as other have suggested is the purchase limit. For a couple that would be $20k per year....for me that's not significant....about 10% of my annual spend. But since I opened a treasury direct account, I am buying the annual limit in my and DW's account...

    I Bonds vs TIPS

Does anyone know how long it takes for tax refund to show up in treasury direct account if you choose to purchase Ibonds with your refund? I had the small deposit based on having to buy in $50 increments show up in my bank account yesterday.

Bonds: for peace of mind or rebalancing

Since I am disciplined in keeping you asset allocation in check, then the answer to this question for me is both. The markets will determine where the money flows. In my case I withdraw funds for spending in January and re-balance if necessary at that time. If for example my allocation is at...

Are You Worried About Your Bond Index Fund?

Again no. Every single time an asset class starts to underperform a thread starts and multiple predictions about the future materialize. At this point I just chuckle because I realize it's human nature to look at short term risk or performance and extrapolate it out into the future many...

Are You Worried About Your Bond Index Fund?

No. Can't remember who said this "If you get upset and start making drastic changes to your portfolio when one of you asset classes goes down while your whole portfolio rises, you shouldn't be managing your own money" Might have been Bernstein now that I think about it. Nobody can predict...

    Stable Value vs Bonds

My belief is that it's impossible to time or predict anything in the financial markets and that includes interest rates. If I had listened to talking heads in the financial media back in 2018 when they said rates were going to 5%, it would have been a huge mistake to leave my bond funds. One...

How much in cash at the time of retirement?

I had about 3 years worth at retirement but my withdrawal rate has been lower than originally budgeted so it turned out to be more than 3 years. Have been adding to that bucket recently to fund some toys. I do realize that it’s a drag on the portfolio but I can live with it.
  21. T

Did the retired you improve your investment returns?

Unfortunately the odds are stacked against you beating the benchmarks over the long term. Some will beat it and some will under-perform but the value weighted average of all that activity will be the same as holding the market portfolio. That's before expenses....including expenses and taxes...

    REIT allocation

It is an insignificant percentage of my portfolio. I was thinking about adding a couple of percentage points to solve that problem.....if I do, I will add to pre-tax bucket. I hear you on receiving the tax forms....I usually get them in March....same is going to happen this year.

    REIT allocation

I am holding a tiny position in VNQ, it represents about 0.5% of my portfolio. I bought it more than 10 years ago and it certainly has under performed the broad market. For some reason, I know....the psychological biases I have and the need to tinker some, I want to add to this position using...

Risk of Sitting on Large (Long Term) Cap Gains?

I'm sitting at 60% of my investable assets in taxable right now. Have been doing Roth conversions in parallel with raising cash by selling some equities in taxable to fund a large purchase....been focused on the combination of the two for tax purposes. Since the bulk of our equities are in...

Small caps best since the Nov election. Why?

Certainly could be some mean reversion going on. Might also be a relief rally since, at least at the moment, business in the smaller cap companies is looking up.....especially if we get a big spending package. Whatever the case may be, I'll take it.
