    What was Your Workout Today?

Thanks for posting those videos, Al. I've just started focusing on firming up my trunk muscles. My lower body gets a lot of action with my cycling and trail hiking, but the waist up needs work. I absolutely *hate* crunches, so I'll give the planking a try.

Employer pension or lump sum rollover of pension?

I took the lump sum and rolled it over into an IRA with Vanguard, along with my 401k. Vanguard's financial analysis predicted we could live comfortably with a very small probability of running out of principal. We retired at age 56 in 2001. In spite of a few butterflies in the stomach at first...

    eBay phone sale problem

Katsmeow, you deserve kudos for going to such lengths to satisfy your iPhone buyer. You're the kind of eBay seller I like to deal with. :flowers:

    Teaching English Abroad

A friend of ours once commented that she makes enough teaching English in Shanghai for 5 or 6 months a year to cover all of her costs of living very well here on Nevis for the rest of the year.

    What was Your Workout Today?

Went out for a hilly ride this morning. I cycle three mornings a week with a small group. They're all 20-30 years younger than I am, so I really have to be careful to take it easy on them. Haha! ;D Actually, biking with youngsters really inspires me to push myself harder than I would on my own...

Would You Delay ER on a Rumor?

Tough decision, but what's the downside of a "wait and see" strategy? If it's just working for a few more months, it might be worth it. Another thought... I don't know about your hubbie's company, but some companies will grandfather employees who retire after a certain date, but before the...

what did you do today? (2008-2015) (closed)

When we sold our home in Virginia to move to Nevis we gave away 1/3 of our stuff to friends and relatives, 1/3 to charities, and brought the rest with us to furnish a much smaller home here. For me, it was absolutely liberating to get rid of all that stuff we'd accumulated over the decades.

Realistic "real" returns for next 20 years

Vanguard tells me that my overall portfolio management costs are 0.14%. And, as an owner of Vanguard funds, I share ownership of the company and it's "profits", viz. I wonder if they're fibbing...

I'd don't know, but it took me all day to do it. :coolsmiley:

    What was Your Workout Today?

20 miles of cycling with friends. We start early to avoid the traffic and heat of the sun.

    Retired at 55

High management fees can significantly chip away at your returns. My Vanguard portfolio is 80% index funds and 20% managed funds and still only costs me 0.14%. I don't think I could do much better than that unless I wanted to manage a portfolio of individual stocks myself, which I don't. Too...

    Retired at 55

One solution out of many possible is to put your money in mutual funds and let the mutual fund managers do the managing. My choice was Vanguard, and with $1MM you qualify for an annual free, personalized financial plan. My overall costs are 0.17% for a mix of index and managed funds. No need to...

    Newbie here introducing himself

Hi, bobecuame. If I were your age I'd be in all stocks, too. In fact, I was but it was mostly the S&P Index. Worked out very well, as I was able to retire at age 56.

For those who exercise. Setting exercise goals in ER ?

Rather than specific goals, I've found that it helps me more to have friends to exercise with. We're blessed with good weather year-round here, so I'm able to cycle with a small group three days a week. We start at sun-up and go pretty hard for an hour or two. I hike (aerobically, on wooded...

I (might) need help simplifying my retirement accounts

I came up with 50% bonds and 50% stocks for my risk profile. Here's what the Vanguard analyst recommended for me... 50 % in Total Bond Market Index, and the rest in... Strategic Equity Morgan Growth Total International Stock Index Windsor II Fund Total Stock Market Index Explorer plus the...

    Early retiree, 11 years later...

Thanks, guys. Rowdy, my first sail ever was in Round Bay on the Severn River when my uncle took me out on his Comet and let me handle the jib sheets. I think that may have been what hooked me on sailing.

Hi, all. Thanks for the warm welcome! Janet, yes, we're planning to move back to the Richmond, Virginia, area. Maybe I'll get a small trailer sailer that I can sail it on the Bay. Floridanurse, you're way ahead of where we were. It took me until age 57 to figure out we could afford to do some...

I (might) need help simplifying my retirement accounts

A Bird in Hand, Simplifying is a good idea. Since you're mostly with Vanguard, they can make it easy for you to do that. Vanguard has a program to help you figure out the right mix of specific funds to meet your financial goals. First you fill out an online questionnaire to establish your risk...

    Early retiree, 11 years later...

Thanks, Michael. Moving back is a big step, but the time is right for it. It was never our intent to stay here forever. When we retired back in 2001, we decided that we didn't want to fritter away our retirement years, so we decided to take roughly five year "chunks" and focus on doing...

    Any Regrets?

My wife and I retired at age 56. The first six months were difficult for me. It took me that long to adjust to the lack of structure, pressure of deadlines, expectation of finishing the day with something concrete accomplished, etc. The other adjustment was getting used to so much "togetherness"...

Hi, all. I just joined up to see what's going on over here--looks like an interesting forum. I've been a member of Cruisersforum.com, a sister forum in the Social Knowledge group, for a few years, and served as a moderator and administrator there for a while, so thanks in advance to the mods...
