    Aiming for early 30s

Ok, let me be the first one to state the obvious - you are not living on $10k, since you can't discount the car value to $0, ignore insurance / property taxes, discount house maintenance to $0 even when it is performed and so on. Of course, you don't need to spend much on car maintenance on a...

What if you won't get 6.777% annual rate of return that you seem to be planning for?

    The way to ER immediately?

Once I start counting the tires on our bikes and kids bikes (total of 9.5 bikes), number of tires quickly goes through the roof. We need another metric, like number of tires / person. Otherwise, it is unfair that Kramer can get away with a smaller household number :-).

    3.2%, 10-year CD

10-year TIPS are currently 0.5%. I guess I would not be buying them tomorrow after all. After today's FED decision, CDs might be a better choice.

    3.2%, 10-year CD

Not entirely correct. You can't liquidate I-bonds at all for the first year (and then it is a 3 months penalty for the first 5). In addition to that, you can't buy I-bonds in an IRA, like I am planning to do with TIPS. Of course, "safety" is nice, but 0.7% / year is a decent bonus. But what...

    3.2%, 10-year CD

Why would buying a 10-year Bond and holding it to maturity would hurt? BTW, 10-year TIPS auction is tomorrow. Today's rate on 10-year TIPS is 0.7%. It looks pretty attractive to me and I might participate with a small amount. It definitely beats the current I-bonds.

    3.2%, 10-year CD

Are you sure that you can do that with the brokerage CDs as suggested in the OP?

Obamacare - It's gonna cost a lot more if you smoke

But does the question on the application says: "Were you a smoker?" or "Are you a smoker?" ? If the question is "are you a smoker?" then stop smoking a few weeks before that X-ray is all it should take.

Obamacare - It's gonna cost a lot more if you smoke

Are you saying that smokers won't be allowed to quit anymore??? And how can a general practitioner know that info anyway? Would not he/she needs an authorization to perform a test? Bottom line: short of forcing everyone to take a test, there is no way for the insurance company to know if a...

Obamacare - It's gonna cost a lot more if you smoke

What if a smoker checks "No"? How can an insurance company (or anyone else) check if a person is a smoker or not? (I am not a smoker, just a thought). Obesity is probably easier to measure than smoking.

2 Kids, Lots of student loans, Retire in less than 20 years?

What is so special about Berkshire? It is really a 1 missed hearbeat of an 85(?) year old man away from a huge drop.

I'd also stop contributing to 529 until student loans are repaid.

38, hoping to ER in 7 yrs, but just got started

I guess I don't understand the question. You are making $125K. Your expenses are $28K. Ok, maybe you are not counting taxes, then it is another $20-30k or so. Where is the rest of the money go if not to savings?

    Just getting started

Yes, you are correct. But you are single and if you are not contributing to 401K @ work (or not contributing much) then you should be in 25% Federal + State tax bracket. So, in your situation it is better to get tax benefits now, since not many people (and definitely not with your current...

Take a look at Traditional IRA instead of Roth IRA. At least before you are getting married. There is no reason to pay 25% in taxes.
